The only reason the movies do that is because the director wants the actor to have his face out there as much as possible. At least that's my theory.
Hence why Superman may be the perfect Hollywood superhero.

They don't have to waste precious screenwriting time trying to constantly get that damned mask off the movie star.
That makes sense.

Now I have to watch Superman Returns to see if the CGI looks dated or not.

Some shots do. When he brings the shuttle up into space he pushes it away somewhat and the exhaust washes over him - it's a transition from CGI to the actor and the last few seconds of CGI look pretty plastic-y.

I will specifically look for that.

I started reading Superman in the 80s when Byrne took over so I am not much of a fan of the bumbling fool version of Clark Kent. I much prefer the calm, assertive, and confident Clark Kent much more.
I started reading Superman in the 1950s, but I also prefer Byrne's rebooted version of Clark and the other characters - they're a little more like human beings than the previous incarnations.

It's Byrne's reboot that made a show like Lois And Clark possible - which is a good thing, even if only the first season was worth watching.

I'm pretty sure the Clark Kent from the earlier cartoons and television series weren't bumbling idiots, either. He was more, you know, mild-mannered instead.

Even though the comics themselves have moved away from it, the Byrne Superman has been the strongest influence on all of the Superman adaptations that have come out since: from the Saturday morning cartoon series that came out around the same time, through Superman The Animated series, Lois and Clark, and Smallville.

That's not what that means.
Thanks. Cuz they didn't teach us that in law school.

That's the difference between the DC and Marvel Universe. For the most part Marvel's superheroes let everyone one know who they are. In the DC universe the secret identity seems much more important.
Actually that's a really new development. It used to be the other way around.

The older I get the harder it is for me to suspend disbelief that people don't know Clark Kent is Superman.
That's one of the reasons what Reeve did was so remarkable.
bear in mind, too that when Superman was created, there weren't high speed camera taking pictures of absolutely everything and everyone at every second.
Though, of course, Lois was always in close proximity to him. She just was never very bright.

The other way around? So, you mean for the most part, DC characters let everyone know who they are? What the fuck?

Or, were you just talking about Marvel?

Well, not everybody, but pretty much all the heroes knew who all the other heroes were. And there are a shitload of heroes.
On the other hand, over at Marvel even the Avengers didn't know many of each other's identities.

He's talking about Marvel. Spidey, the Avengers, the X-men and Daredevil all had secret IDs. The first generation of Marvel's Silver Age were pretty traditional in that respect. Hulk was discovered to be Bruce Banner early on. Don Blake more or less faded into the background as Thor became more Asgard oriented. DD (1994) and Iron Man's (2002) revelations are recent. The status of Cap's secret ID has yoyo'd back and forth a few times. With world wide memory wipes erasing it more than once. Not sure when the Pyms went public. Might have been Jan's wedding to Yellowjacket.

Englehart addressed this in his first run. Thor and Iron Man totally knew each others secret IDs, even though they pretended they didn't.

IIRC, the JLA first learned each others civilian IDs in JLofA #19. But I think they might have erased the memory of it.

Yeah, but somehow he got it back only to have it exposed again. Not sure of his current status.
