And yet he has publicly stated that he would like to play a part in the show somehow. Granted, SLJ as an ongoing regular is out of the question. But an appearance or two a year? For the really important episodes (Sweeps)? I could see it happening.

Yes of course and there seems also to be a trend with major movie actors to try out (well written) TV shows because it gives them more time to develop characters and an interesting acting challenge.

May not be the case here but it seems Jackson likes the Fury role and why not invest a week or two of shooting and have fun again (and make some money off it).

I hope Smulders does join S.H.I.E.L.D. in some some capacity, I really liked her in Avengers.
EDIT: I didn't realize this was starting as just a pilot, I thought it was going directly to series.

Joss Whedon calls S.H.I.E.L.D. "very hopeful' and that "it is definitely a Marvel show".

Clark Gregg hints at Coulson's return and possible future movie appearances...

After people see the show, they’ll have some clue as to why I’m still there, still breathing. But I don’t think they’ll know everything…

If his return is dealt with, as is speculated here, as part of the season one arc of the show AND Iron Man 3 takes place a year after the events of The Avengers it could fit in right there.

The SHIELD TV show could take place during that year. Then however the events of Thor Dark World and Cap: Winter Soldier unfold Coulson could easily return in Avengers 2 as SHIELD season 2 starts(assuming it's the greatness we hope and has a S2).
