Ignoring the Enterprise-A (which may or may not be a new build), do we have any evidence that Starfleet doesn't? The US Navy certainly does (see the Enterprise CVN-80 - named and registered, not scheduled to begin building until 2018).

We'd also have to ignore the Enterprise-E, which launched a little over a year after the destruction of her predecessor.

We don't know what's a big plot point and what's not, as has been the case with all the issues of "ST Ongoing". Some things are easter eggs, some things are deliberate red herrings.

Yeah, I didn't really see where it was that much more high tech looking than most modern sci-fi stuff.

I think having the Enterprise be higher tech than the 60's version is fine. This is supposed to be an alternate timeline after all. But I do wish the Kelvin had been very retro. TOS style on the big screen would have been beautiful.

Why not? It could have been around and destroyed anytime since 2233.
