I wonder if JJ is going to be saying, "This movie was not made for STAR WARS fans; it's being made for movie fans."

Or, with our luck, he'll actually say it's made for the Star Wars fans.

You missed the word "necessarily".
When Abrams made that quite about ST2009, he said the film was not made "necessarily" for Star Trek fans, but for movie fans in general.

The exact quote from him was:
"The whole point was to try to make this movie for fans of movies, not fans of 'Star Trek,' necessarily".

One word makes a big difference.

.
And when the Abrams response you've quoted in part above goes on immediately to say:
"If you’re a fan, we’ve got one of the writers who’s a devout Trekker, so we were able to make sure we were serving the people who are completely enamored with `Star Trek.’ But we are not making the movie for that contingent alone."
his intended meaning is quite plain, and it's not at all a brush-off of Star Trek fans. I don't have any trouble imagining that Abrams will take a similar approach to making a Star Wars movie - it won't be made just for them, but at the same time he's going to make efforts to include lots which those fans will enjoy seeing.

Nemesis was just lazy, and that's worse. No explanation of the Romulans getting Picard's DNA that long ago, much less one that would fit in with established Next Gen timeline and canon....the use of yet another Brent Spiner android that's not as sophisticated as Data....Picard being bald as a cadet when he was described (and even shown) as having hair as late as his tenure as captain of the Stargazer.
-Romulans are known to have inteligence operatives among their enemies, and Shinzon's age corresponds with when Picard was either at the end of his time commanding the Stargazer or after it was lost. We know being captain of the Stargazer made Picard a name, Geordi read about him in the Academy.

-Picard shaved his head when the pictire was taken.

Yeah, I suppose so.

The movie just does such a pitiful job of explaining most things....that's my main nitpick.

^Isn't that called Treksposition, (trek+exposition) something I thought we (mostly) all were happy to see so greatly reduced in ST09?

Anway, some thoughts from reading upthread. Overheard, (by me) of father of family just before screening of ST09 started: "This movie better not turn my son into a nerd" (I turned around aiming a stern glare directly at him, he flashed an embarrassed smile which said, No offense intended. Not sure which of us won that encounter.)

I liked Batman Forever, Batman Begins, TDN. I hated Batman & Robin, TDNR.

INS was an expanded NG episode. I've gone back and forth over NEM, some viewings I can get into it but others, I shut it off.

He wants to do the SW fans proud, but not us Trekkies. The nerve.

Incidentally, are Orci and Kurtzman attached in any capacity?

I've always thought of the stereotypical basement-dwelling fan as being like Bigfoot. Maybe he exists, but I'm not sure anyone has ever actually seen one.

Most of the Trekkies I know have jobs and kids and mortgages like everyone else.

Yes. The nerve of someone answering a question in a non-identical way to a similar question. Why, one would think he did it deliberately to rub Trek fan's faces in his clearly evident contempt for Trek and all it stands for.

Re: Abrams Directing Star Wars

Disney and Lucas are really pushing ahead with the new film. As of today the further 3-D releases of the prequels have been postponed or cancelled.

No news about the Original Trilogy in 3-D being nixed, but the dates were never set anyways.

Abrams on Trek: "I'm not making this for the fans!"

Abrams on Wars: "I want to do the fans proud."

Well as I'm a fan of both franchises at least he cares about... half of me?

Yeah, right.

He's given us a lot better than anyone had any right to expect, given the extraordinarily damaged state of the Star Trek franchise in 2006.

You're lucky Paramount didn't license the thing out for a cheapo comedy with Jack Black as Kirk and Ben Stein as Spock.

Thanks.

Now that's one more reason for me to wake up screaming at night.

Given the success of Galaxy Quest, you gotta wonder whether that sort of idea was seriously considered.
