Abrams Directing Star Wars

I'd be happy if we got Nolan instead of Abrams as he puts more substance in to his action movies (Compare Inception to Trek 09 and MI:3!).

TDKR wasn't a very good ending to the Batman series but I've seen worse endings (Hi NuBSG!).

Well, I'd say in popular culture Star Trek fandom is associated with intelligent geekiness whereas Batman is thought of as more immature and manchild-ish.

Neither are very "highbrow" but that's my point.

Seriously? The guy who makes movies about the fellow who dresses up like a bat and the guy in the red cape who flies?

If Nolan made a Star Trek movie he'd do it differently than folks are used to and there'd be a lot of excitement (and anger from some quarters) about it. That's all.

Maybe by its fans.

The current brand of Batman is far better done and put together than any Star Trek movie out there. It's far more appealing to the general public than Star Trek. It also elevated Nolan to such heights that him coming to helm the 3rd Star Trek movie would be regarded as a huge step backwards for him.

At the end of the day it's ludicrous to think Nolan would come within 100 feet of anything to do with Star Trek.

That's also true of his movies compared to most of the previous "brands of Batman," though.

Unless Nolan can move now to directing only original material while maintaining his career at these heights - possible, but far from certain - he's going to be "slumming" again in one studio franchise or another, sooner or later. Very, very few directors of this generation avoid it.

And as I noted, he also produces films like Superman. He could easily wind up producing Star Trek.

You know me, I call it like I see it. Nolan has elevated his brand into something special, given his movies' earnings and his well received and reviewed style. The guy hasn't made a stinker.....yet.

If Nolan made a Star Trek movie he'd do it differently than folks are used to and there'd be a lot of excitement (and anger from some quarters) about it. That's all.

I'd be the first in line to see it. I just prepare for the worst is all.

Well I think you're way overestimating the esteem that Trek is held in. Much of the press surrounding Trek 09 was incredulous that Abrams was able to revive such a moribund and tired property and make it fun and watchable again. Whatever 'highbrow' credit that Trek had was spent a long, long time ago.

I adore Trek with every fiber and molecule in the marrow of my very bones and it's been my favorite pop culture franchise, but any franchise that gives us "Spock's Brain," "Profit and Lace" and "Spirit Folk" can't lay permanent claim to the Scepter of Intellectual Entertainment.

That's not mutually exclusive with him finding himself "elevating" another underestimated studio property. Especially these days. Hell, who in Hollywood besides Spielberg and Lucas have managed to stay completely off the franchise plantations while continuing to command the resources to make any damn film they please?

Many talented - and a few brilliant - directors have had their moments in the last two decades...but if you want to work with a lot of money and resources and be able to leverage serious distribution, you wind up doing a lot of work to please the people who themselves work to please stockholders. Ask Tim Burton.
