Problem with the episode "Justice"

er, I don't think criminal behavior is necessarily genetic, especially when "criminal behavior" in that society can be as vague as "accidentally stumbling over some flowers."

I’m not saying the law itself is encoded in their genes, but a predisposition to obey the rules and fear punishment is most definitely a genetic trait. It’s why dogs make much better pets than jackals.

There seems to be a huge problem with the episode Justice. In the beginning of the episode Tasha Yar describes the Edo's legal system as very straight forward and based on common sense. Later on, Wesley Crusher is sentenced to death for committing a minor tort. How did Tasha Yar not know that death was the punishment for almost every crime, if she studied their legal code, that seems like a big oversight on the part of her and the crew at large. Why was this oversight allowed to occur?

It's a bit gauche at the very least, especially since they'd already featured the belligerent, dishonest, kidnapping, vaccine lording culture of people who looked and sounded like they'd just walked out of Eddie Murphy's fictional Zamunda

Were all those things likely inadvertent? Probably, but it's still a reason to have problems with those 2 episodes in my opinion

My biggest problem with the episode is that the Enterprise made contact with the Edo in the first place, they seemed to be not only pre warp but pre space flight. In "Coming of Age" they mentioned that Picard violated the prime directive by interfering in the Edo's laws but didn't he violate the prime directive by just making contact with them?

I assume the Edo were already "contaminated", as in, they were already aware of the warp-capable galactic society beyond their planet. Perhaps their god had something to do with that.
