Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger - The Last Stand
I saw it tonight as well. I found it to be an enjoyable film actually and I didn't even have low expectations. Middling ones perhaps and it reached that easily. I will say I was relieved that Johnny Knoxville doesn't ruin the movie. He has his comedic bits per the role he has but he's only in the last act really after a brief intro in the first act. The one glaring problem in the film is: I'm not going to oversell it despite my grade, it's a solid renter but it was fun. If this weren't Arnold I'd have waited for DVD, it was one of the few guilty pleasures I allow myself and broke my soft rule about "big screen necessity". I like my 80's action stars, I'll see Bullet to the Head also---and that one my expectations are low.

Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger - The Last Stand
First film he does after ten years, and the hyaena are already waiting. It's a film like Walking Tall (which coincidentally also had Knoxville in a similar role) which made about 60 million worldwide with a PG-13 rating. Anyone who expected this film to do more is nuts.

Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger - The Last Stand
Although to be fair, he did look awfully old and slow and tired in Expendables 2. I wouldn't be surprised if that killed a lot of people's interest in seeing him again.... |

Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger - The Last Stand
And really, when was the last time he headlined a hit that wasn't named "Terminator"? 1996's Eraser? Maybe he should have gone for a comedy instead. I'll redbox this at some point, as I will The Tomb, which I hope does better, but... I dunno... |

Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger - The Last Stand
I'd counter with the notion that people were more interested in Gangster Squad for an action alternative if just movie options was the point of contention. When a movie does this poorly it would be nice to have a clearer picture of just why people didn't show up. Arnold got positive mentions in Expendables so you'd think if just his core base showed up the movie would've done $15-20m. Could people involved in Inauguration activities have hindered things. Tack on the NFL conference games on Sunday as another possible thing that kept people away from that type film that Arnold does? People still went to the theater obviously, if your name was Jessica it was a stellar weekend. I haven't read yet and it's usually reported at some point what the year-to-year comparison would be for a holiday weekend. If it's down overall that would lend credence to people being broadly distracted by other events and Arnold's base just got hit harder.

Re: Arnold Schwarzenegger - The Last Stand
I really enjoyed this movie. It was a lot of fun, good action in it, but a lot of ridiculousness to it. (First of all, I doubt even a super-charged Corvette is going to go nearly 200 miles an hour in reverse!) The blood splatters from the gun shots was way over the top and you knew the kid was dead as soon as he had the heart-to-hear, "I want something bigger!" talk he had with Arnie. But, over all, it was a fun movie. I enjoyed it I think it shows Arnie can certainly come back into this even though he's looking more and more like the fake rubber Arnie double used for the effects in the first Terminator. Fun movie, and I think it got going more once all of the set-up stuff was over and the "story" was really going (Once Danny Deadmeat Deputy died) the movie got good. A lot of the setup with the most incompetent FBI group ever was boring. Some stuff was too much to take, like the Corvette that speeding toward Mexico at 200 miles an hour for the better part of day or two and... never... needs... gas?! Fun movie.
