Jadzia was also one of the sexiest characters on the show when she wanted to be. In "Through the Looking Glass" was a pretty good example.

Even if she didn't want to be the sexiest character she still was it

I liked her character, ok she flirted with Quark an Bashir but they should have known better.
If you chased a woman for so long and she still doesn't want you move on.

Fun thing is, I don't even particularly like the character. She was ok, with some potential, but never put it to full use. But it was interesting to see finally some free-spirit character on Star Trek, which is notorious for being more than a little stuffy.

I also find that Nana Visitor is hotter.

Yeah, on Voyager, Tom Paris was supposedly the "fun" character who didn't care about rules, but by the end, he was more or less like everyone else. In that respect, Jadzia was unique.

Thank God for Kira, and for Nana Visitor for playing her so well. I don't know how she managed to pull off being badass AND adorable at the same time, but she did it. I also think she was prettier than Jadzia. Even with the nose wrinkles.

Sorry, I just really love Kira. She's one of my favorite characters.

Jadzia was by far my last favourite character from DS9's main staff. Though not because of her flirting or even her inconsistent character development.

I just didn't enjoy Terry Farrel's acting, for the most part. The lack of good stories was also, in my opinion, crucial. The last Jadzia focused episode was in early season 4... And some of them weren't that good to begin with...

Mine too. Nana was my first real Star Trek totally-smitten-crush. Even though I eventually grew out if it, I still always loved the character. Kira was just such a strong woman and great role model.

love Nana Visitor, LOVE her.. I always liked Kira but she got seriously awesome for me in season 6. When there's not an impending disaster and the station is at relative peace, she has this incredibly tranquil and composed demeanor that i just cannot get enough of.. and that smile..

I don't think i even find her attractive (although she obviously is quite beautiful), i just love the actress and how much she owns Kira.. She is perfect.

Agreed. Sadly, the novels kind of ruined her. She became a total Mary-Sue, well, so did Ezri. But at least her arch fit within the pentameters established on the show. Kira's arch totally came out of left field.

I have to say, at first I didn't like Jadzia, but as her character developed, or the actress got better, I loved her more and more. I like Jadzia for being free thinking, for not being so restricted in who she finds attractive, she can like anyone and everyone (even Ferengi, which I find disgusting) but I just love the whole Trill nature. That much experience in a new body every time must make you able to accept just about anything. Just saw the episode where she got together again with the Trill that previously was the woman she was married to when she was Torias (sorry, am terrible with names without looking them all up, I never forget a face though)... LOVED it. Though my appreciation of Trill culture diminished then, how such a culture could forbid contacts between lovers from a previous life.. it's logical but not sensible for me.

Uhh, anyway. I love Jadzia. Haven't gotten around to Ezra (or whatever her name is) yet, though unfortunately I have found the spoiler, so am dreading Jadzias death.

I think they forbid contact with previous spouses because it demotes the living host to the needs of a previous host. It makes sense to allow the existing host as much of their own personality as the necessarily schizophrenic influence of the Dax parasite will allow.

I thought that in the episode they said it was because the whole nature of being a Trill was about new experiences, new people.. I could get if it was about leaving the new host to their own experiences and not involving them in previous loves, but don't think it was about this. Besides, the host/slug thingie are one new whole so should be able to decide together what will happen next.

They started her off as sort of a wise-old-sage. They were trying for the ironic twist of Obi-wan in a young woman's body. That didn't work.

Next they put her in the strait-up science geek role, the go-to exposition person. Essentially, she was Spock lite. That didn't work either.

Finally they settled on the "free-spirit" thing. But they never felt comfortable with it and retreated back to a previous persona whenever they could. .

Bingo, except I thought the "free-spirit" thing worked better than the others. But, yeah, Jadzia had no consistent personality for the first season or so. (She got one eventually, IMHO.)

True story: when I co-wrote my one-and-only DS9 novel way back when, I just couldn't get a handle on the character and avoided writing about her as much as possible--to the extent that our editor complained and made us go back and add some more Jadzia to the book!

Such a forward-thinking, yet deep-seated, taboo doesn't make much sense though without an evolutionary component. Similar to the incest taboo having a biological component*. Would have been interesting to see this more explored, but if I recall...they already did a 'Dark secret of the Trill' episode.

*Again, like the TNG ep with David Ogden Stiers. Their tradition seems dumb as hell right now, but at one time made sense.

The reason given for the taboo was that reassosiation prevents the symbiote form moving on, a really weak reason imho that also implies that the host is the one at fault when in reality the desire to reassociate lies purely with the symbiote.

A much better and imho more obvious reason for the taboo, one that would justify the harsh punishment involved, would be the fact that the symbionts past memories and desires may be unfairly influencing the thoughts and feelings of the current host to the extent that they become overwhelmed by it all and behave in ways they normally wouldnt.

The perfect example of this is the one night stand that occurs between Ezri and Worf in the final season. Ezri likes Worf and may even find him attractive but she has no true romantic interest in him. Their sleeping together came about because of Jadzia’s memories and emotions influencing Ezri, which is not too surprising when you consider that in the early half of that season Ezri spends a lot of time being overwhelmed by the memories and personalities of the past hosts to the point that she cant even remember what her favourite beverage is!

In Rejoined it is imho strongly implied that this is what is happening with Lenara and Dax. There is a scene where they are working together on the Defiant, the first time they have been left alone together, where Lenara explicitly states that she has never been affected by the emotions and desires of a past host so strongly before now. She then proceeds to get confused over whether she is Lenara or Nilani.

If the symbionts were not involved, if Lenara and Jadzia were just two unjoined Trill, would they have harboured any romantic feelings for one another? They would certainly have been friends and maybe that friendship might have developed into something more over time, but without the symbionts they would have been strangers who had only just met and Lenara was only assigned to DS9 for a short time so its very unlikely they would have formed any deep and long lasting romantic attachment to one another.

(also i dont buy the whole symbiont and host are one conciousness thing. Sure thats the explanation given but imho from the way Jadzia and Ezri behaved it came accross as host and symbiont being two partially joined conciousnesses performing a balancing act of sorts)
