Don't they carry? -a negative in this round is transferred to the next?

Re: VOTE! Misc Av Contest:Mythological Creatures

Kai, I think the problem is that this time it's such a difficult decision. All the avatars are awesome. Usually, we have one or several that are not quite as good as the others so that it's a comepratively easy choice.
It's a pity we have only 2 votes. Your fairy would have been my #3.
My #1 and #2 were RJD's and TD's avatars, but I am biased as I love wolves (occasionally meet some up in the national park) and because this mythical Danish king is very close to a mythical German emperor (Ours, too, sleeps till he is needed. He sits at a stone table and his beard has grown all the way through the stone. Let's hope there's a barber at hand when we need the emperor's help )

But, what if I have a negative in this contest, but don't even make an entry next round, then join the contest after that again?

Yeah, I'm aware of that. The too-many-options problem, not the German emperor myth. But it sounds intriguing, making me wonder why I haven't heard of it before. What's the name of that emperor?

Anyway, thanks for your concern, but I'm good.

^^ There have been times when I've gotten zero votes, too.

Ah, a whole pack of them. I should have thought of that.

^Karl der Große (Charlemagne). Rumour has it that he waits inside Untersberg Mountain.
Others say it's Friedrich Barbarossa. Again others say it's not Untersberg but Kyffhäuser Mountain.
There's rather a lot of versions. A few are mentioned in both the German and English Wikipedia:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untersberg#Mythen
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Untersberg#Legend

Re: VOTE! Misc Av Contest:Mythological Creatures

They say that about Karl der Große?! I'm the son of two German teachers, why did I never hear about that?

Well, thanks for the info, Rhubarbodendron.

Re: VOTE! Misc Av Contest:Mythological Creatures

you're welcome Presumably it is because that particular legend is a quite local one and mostly restricted to Southern Bavaria and the adjoining parts of Austria.
The same goes for the Kyffhäuser legend and the former GDR. Plus: the young people don't know these legends anymore and the old ones have no real occasion to tell them. I mean, which family sits at home with the TV switched off, listening to their grandparents telling legends, myths and creepy stories?

The theme was also used in Paul Keller's "das letzte Märchen", a comperatively unknown novel. It was first published in 1905 and is rather pro-war, empire and very strict government. In his story it's Rübezahl who sleeps there. http://gutenberg.spiegel.de/buch/1433/17 (scroll down to the middle)
I like the novel because the language is beautiful and most of the story is quite funny (particularly chapter 3), yet the political undercurrents make me wince. It's interesting (and creepy for a rather left-wing social democrate) how in hindsight the 3rd Reich quite clearly announced itself for a very long time and how many different factors came together, making the result almost inevitable.

Aren't those families merely characters on TV?

Re: VOTE! Misc Av Contest:Mythological Creatures

That's a great idea for a TV show. A family that never watches TV but sits around reading and telling stories to each other. Unfortunately, getting a channel to air a show that encourages people to not watch TV would be as likely as getting politicians to vote for election reform.

Wasn't that the premise of the Family Guy Star Wars parodies?!
