Another place I enjoyed in Queensland was Cooberrie Park. It's a wildlife sanctuary.

I got to feed a kangaroo from my hands, and hold a koala.

Not as soft as you would think. Their fur is thick and wooly, and just a little rough. They are a trip.

The kangaroos...we outsiders don't always appreciate how strong and powerful they are. One kangaroo was pulling my hand toward it to eat more, and it was a little uncomfortable how strong he was pulling.

If I can find the pictures, I'll scan and post them. I think I have a couple from Brisbane and Rockhampton too.

Re: I am going Down Under!

Here's how to convert temperatures.

To go from F to C...

Subtract 30 and divide by two.

So 100F goes down to 70, and halved to get 35C (which is about what we've got at the moment!)

To go from C to F...

Double it and add thirty.

So, 25 C gets doubles to 50, then add 30 and you get 80F.

It isn't exact, but it's reasonably close, certainly close enough to know if it is going to be hot or cold or whatever.

No, here's how you convert temperatures:

Anyway I'm pretty sure Naira comes from the lands of celsius (aka, not america) herself.

F to C: subtract 32 then multiply by 5/9

C to F: multiply by 9/5 then add 32

I work in an industry where conversions in the same system or going from one to another is commonplace. Certain things you just remember. 7.48 gal/ft3, 1 inch/25.4 mm and so on.

How many mg/L of something to I need to add to soften 10 MGD of water. Fuck you metric.

Oh, stop ruining my fun.

The only reason I posted what I did is because it makes it easy to do in your head.

Commiserations and welcome to the club! I have to convert all the time when talking with Americans here. °C to °F, g & kg to oz & lbs, ml & l to liquid oz and Gallons, cm, m & km to inches, feet, yards and miles, g/ml to cups - and the other way round. Not to mention all the different timezones.

(btw, does someone happen to know how many grams a cup of butter equals? And how heavy is a stick of butter in the US?? In Germany it's half a [metric] pound)

Re: I am going Down Under!

Hello everyone!

I am already in Brisbane! I've been here for two days and it seems lovely. I find it very hard to find a place to stay though, as everyone is waiting for the new wave of students in a few weeks and doesn't want to lease for only 3 months...

Interestingly enough, I have not met many Australians yet! Most people in the University and out in the shops seem to be of Asian origin. I remember this being the case in New Zealand as well. Where are all the Australians hidden???

Public transport seems expensive indeed, as someone mentioned above. Sadly, once again, three months is a short time to consider getting a car. And I am so not used to not having one around!

Anyway, things seem very nice (except that it is too hot! - and that's coming from a Greek person...). I hope I 'll have some time to see stuff outside the city as well, I wouldn't want to miss that opportunity.

Thanks for the suggestions. Keep them coming!

Re: I am going Down Under!

If Brisbane is full of asians you will get great food. I hope you don't have too much trouble finding somewhere to stay

You could try Gumtree for a share house, you might be able to find short term easier that way than through real estate agents:
