Re: Firefly first-time/rewatch (NO SPOILERS, please)

Whedon's comment about Jayne was that no one on the show realized that the audience (and, perhaps, the writers) would come to love him as quickly as they did, which apparently complicated some of Whedon's original ideas about how he'd use the character.

IIRC, The Message was the last episode shot, and the funeral scene at the end was the final scene shot. A very fitting "unexpected finale" for a show! I don't know why they chose to NOT show it last.

Objects is another one of my favorites. Whedon has said that he had planned to bring Early back for another visit. It would have been fun to see just how loony he really was.

Yea, I wanted to know more about him as well. It was obvious that he knew more about a certain crew member than anyone on the ship did and I would love to have seen that explored.

Meh. Just what the board needs: another Firefly watch thread Myself and a few others haven't seen it/want to rewatch, so here goes for anyone who wants to join in. And I guess it's sorta timely/appropriate as I believe it's the 10th anniversary?

First thoughts: saw Serenity a few years ago but probably like many non-Firefly fans couldn't really make head nor tail of it, and barely recall it now. The main things that left an impression were a kick-ass fight at the beginning and the main lead, who seemed very much a cool wise-cracker in the Han Solo mode. Errr...that's it. But I've been reliably led to believe that there is much to discover and enjoy over the next 14 weeks.
I never saw the show when it first ran, I got the series set and the movie for Christmas and have been discovering the show for the first time myself. I already wonder why I never saw it to begin with. The characters are interesting to say the least.

But Jayne? He's a jerk. Just sayin'.

They certainly are. I'm all done now but please feel free to post any observations here

Yeah, he's been growing on me, the guy you like to dislike.

One of my favorite interactions is Mal and Inara. After seeing "Out Of Gas," we see they've loved each other from the start, but from "Serenity" (the pilot) on so far, he just can't get past his disdain for what she does, and she won't forgive him for it.

Speaking of "Out Of Gas," was a bit shocked how Mal met Kaylee...she seems like such a "good" girl...

And soooo much we obviously don't know about Shepherd Book...I didn't even know Ron Glass was in the series until I started watching the episodes, that's how in the dark I was about the series...

Now that you've finished the series and the movie, be sure to pick up the comics. In the last series of comics, you'll learn a great deal more about Sheppard Book.

From the way the red carpet was rolled out for him when he was injured, he's obviously got some high level connections...

War Stories: Some more interesting Shepard Book development.. a man rather oddly familiar with Shan Yu, something he shares with Niska. And that could be all lovely and coincidental except the man can SHOOT. And not just at rabbits. And speaking of shooting.. a nice contrast with Kaylee paying like a little kid with Summer in the opening and absolutely unnerved by Summer's killing abilities at the end.

Why did Jayne buy them all a crate of apples?

I'd totally forgotten how Mal stumble off the torture bed and stabs the snakey torture implement into the guy's back!

Lots of advancement of our understanding of the relationships between Mal, Zoe and Wash. Rather sweet scenes after all the torture, "wife soup". That was just such a lovely line, great delivery, so much of a story there.

Still feeling guilty about Ariel.

Another one of my favorites.

And again, Wash gets some of the best lines:
"I've been in a firefight. Well, I was in a fire ... I was fired--from a frycook opportunity."
"Zoe is terse. I can be terse. Once in flight school I was laconic."
