Leslie Mann was born in San Francisco and raised by her mother, a real estate agent. She began her career at the age of 17 with appearances in television commercials. In 1995, Mann was chosen from an open audition of 500 candidates for her first big movie role in The Cable Guy. Mann is married to producer Judd Apatow, with whom she has two daughters, Iris and Maude. She met Apatow on the set of The Cable Guy, which he co-wrote and produced. Mann's daughters, Iris and Maude, appeared in Knocked Up, Funny People and This Is 40 as the children of her character.

This Is 40: After many years of marriage, Pete (Paul Rudd) is the sole male in a household that includes his wife, Debbie (Leslie Mann), and two young daughters. As Pete struggles to keep his record label afloat, he and Debbie navigate a three-week course of sex and romance, career victories and financial hardships, aging parents and maturing children. They'll have to learn to forgive, forget and enjoy the rest of their lives -- before they kill each other.
