I wouldn't say it makes the characters morons, but it doesn't exactly paint Starfleet in a good light. Then again, neither do other events in the film IMO.

But Picard was at least a Lieutenant Commander already, when that happened. He skipped one less rank than Kirk.

Btw, the quote in this threads title and included by the OP should prove to scorners they are trying to make this Trek have substantive quality's. It speaks volumes to me of an intended, deliberate evolution.

For JJTrek mockers to say it's simply all sparkle and 'splosions is akin to the same mistakes nontrekkers/bashers have always made; not really paying close enough attention to what they are witnessing.

It's "qualities.". If you're going to be critical at least try to minimize your own mistakes. Just sayin'.
