Re: Movies Seen in 2012
98. Ted: A 99. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy: B+ 100. Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey: A 101. Jack Reacher: A- 102. Django Unchained: B+ Hobbit: I've not read this since I was about 14 and never read the Silmarillion(which I heard some parts were taken?). So I'm not sure how much is pure Hobbit and how much is "filler" from the Silmarillion but not being a strict Tolkein-ite I wasn't bothered. All I know is I found the film to be very fun and enjoyable. It looks like the film is starting at that point just before Fellowship of the Ring starts, right. Having Frodo and older Bilbo there was a nice tie in. All the Elvish moments and Gladriel(sp) were great! While the structure felt quite similar to FotR imo I felt that H:AUJ had a more natural ending/interlude as we prepare for the second part of the quest. Since we lost some of our company in FotR I did keep expecting one or two of the dwarves to die. My money was on the one with the slingshot. Jack Reacher: I think this could be a good franchise starter. It felt a bit like Taken meets Sherlock Holmes I thought. Taken in that Reacher is a fluid ass kicking machine, Holmes in the thought process of detective work. I will say the film had a few more bits of comedy than I was initially expecting but not so much or so odd that it interrupted the flow of the film. The theater was quite full, since the film hasn't gotten that much press I'm chalking it up to good wom, it's why I was there. Django: The only thing keeping this from being an A grade for me was it felt a bit long. In comparison I didn't feel that with Hobbit and both are similar in duration. This may be the best Tarantino movie for me since Pulp Fiction. Great cast, great performances and really did enjoy hating on Mr. Candy. Stevens as played by SLJackson(aka The Man) was another great standout part. I do like how Django got even with him! The film also made you want to keep rooting for Django. Now that he's 'unchained' and got his wife back I'm curious about what may happen to him. The Civil War is only about a year+ away after all. So for me that wraps up 2012 with a total of 102 new to me films, or not seen in over 10years repeat viewings. Just a bit shy of last years total of 111 films.

Re: Movies Seen in 2012
* - seen before I've seen a lot of short films this year: the first 5 were in a public lecture/showing kind of thing, and the rest at a fantasy/horror festival where they were showing a bunch of them one after the other. Length varies from around 5 mins. to 30-40 mins. I had some trouble remembering/checking what some of them were called, and in one case I couldn't even find out from the official programme, even though I remember the film itself. Re: Movies Seen in 2012
I'd rank my favs like this:
I've not gotten around to Death Proof or Grindhouse, something I need to rectify.

Had to go out to Drafthouse Lake Creek for the re-release of Monsters Inc in 3D. I liked it more this time than the first time I watched it, when it originally came out on DVD. Followed that up with the new Tom Cruise movie at Drafthouse Slaughter. Its obvious he's tryin' to make a new franchise, but I'd rather see another Mission: Impossible. I did pick up One Shot by Lee Child, though... Went to Drafthouse South Lamar for a double feature over the weekend. Started out with Les Miserables, which was the first time I've seen that story...I thought it was pretty good. Followed that up with The Guilt Trip, which was pretty bad, but still had its moments. Used Netflix to watch 2 Days in New York, which sucked. And finally watched Flags of Our Fathers on DVD. Took a couple of tries to finish it, just 'cause of my work schedule and gettin' distracted by The West Wing on Netflix. So, yeah...by my count, that's 353 "new to me" movies for the year. |

Re: Movies Seen in 2012
204. The Pirates! Band of Misfits (B+) 205. Sleepwalk with Me (B-) The Pirates! Band of Misfits: Six months after seeing this for the first time, I think I like it even more. There are a lot of clever details in the background that won't be noticed until a second viewing, which is a level of craft I don't always see in children's films (Pixar excepted). Sleepwalk with Me: For those unfamiliar with Mike Birbiglia's stand-up, there's a lot to like in this movie, which is well-written and competently directed, especially for a first time filmmaker. For those who are familiar with his stand-up, there's a lot that feels old, and inferior to the original monologues they're based upon. Alas, I fall in the second category, but for those who haven't heard much from the comic, this will make for an entertaining and accessible gateway. Theatres: 61 Home Video: 127+1 Computer: 15+1 That's the last of the films I saw in 2012; onto 2013. Not much of an impression on the year in film as a whole, since so many of the movies I saw this year were older films.
