I've no idea, really. I mainly posted it because the suggestion that the red vegetation planet of volcanoes and chalky-looking aliens served more as a starting place from which Our Heroes will be called away as the Real Story begins seemed to fit that portion of the synopsis.

It is also possible that the fact that the Enterprise is under the water, may be called back when another starship falls into the ocean, to foreshadow the fact it is not lost.

Good Grief, that's thing that annoyed me the most. It's like Abrams can't stand the fact that the Enterprise is you know a frakking STARSHIP and needs to be in space. No, that's been done to death so we need put her in the middle of the desert or underwater. In the next movie Abrams will be making it swim through jello because its Kewl. Bah!

I've long predicted jello as the logical next step.

I knew it was coming as soon as I saw they went with those short TOS dresses.

First off, the Prime Directive in instances of a genocidal nature is probably the most insanely assinine, stupid thing ever written. I totally get it and agree with the idea behind it for non-interference in developing cultures, but stopping a culture from dying is nowhere near a crime in my book. Though it makes it cool that they try to do it surreptitiously.

Also, the device can't be remotely activated because then we wouldn't have a cool scene of Spock trying to survive in an exploding volcano.

Judging by our own asinine intervention in our own time, I don't think the Prime Directive is so bad. Cruel maybe but sometimes the natural course of civilization is to die. Remember the Klingons were result of an advance race interfering and look at the mess they made.
