My guess is that they were Klingons. The brief glimpse of their head armor seemed to match or at least resemble what the Rura Penthe guards were wearing in the deleted scenes from the last film.

I'm actually convinced that Cumberbatch is neither Khan or Mitchell, but possibly Garth. Then again, he could be a new character (the theory I've had the longest).

I didn't notice the Bat'leth! Cool... good continuity. Even some 22nd century Klingons ("Marauders(ENT)") carried them so there's no canon violation showing Klingons from over 100 years later using them in combat.

That orange glowing backdrop appears to be the same one that Abrams had in his MTV Awards skit that showed a close up of a Klingon on this computer monitor over his shoulder. So I guess before tonight we had seen Four frames.

Could still be wrong...but if that's Dehner in the trailer then I'd say Cumberbatch is in all likelihood the update of the old Gary Lockwood character.

Based on the trailer, I pretty much feel the same. Plus, Gary pulling starships from the sky sounds awesome....though it would be crazy difficult for the crew to beat him.

Even if it is Dehner, there's no reason that makes the villain Gary Mitchell. They could be mixing and matching elements.
