...Indeed, were the Salt Vampires ever native to M113?

Timo Saloniemi
Yes they were. Professor Robert Crater was studying the ruins of M113 when he encounter the one seen in The Man Trap and he said it was the last of its kind.
However, being the last of its kind doesn't equal being native or limited to inhabiting M113.

Also, Crater wasn't exactly working on all thrusters. One crazy guy living alone on a planet says it's the last of it's kind and we should take his word?

Why shouldn't we?

Though I imagine high blood pressure is what caused the species to go extinct!

Re: TOS set during the 22nd Century!?

The creature pursued its goals by providing each of its victims an image the victim wanted to see. If Crater the man wanted to see his dead wife alive again, so be it - but if Crater the scientist wanted to see a sympathetic monster that was the last of its kind and deserving of nothing but pity, this illusion would also be provided!

For all we know, the Salt Vampire was actually a marooned crewman from the crashed battleship of an advanced starfaring empire, and its chief motivation for infiltrating Kirk's ship was to find a high grade subspace transceiver it could modify into a hyperplexing beacon to call in reinforcements. (Having a snack while waiting for the opportunity would only be natural.)

I think you're overthinking it, Timo.

Kirk's immediate predecessor in the long chain of starship captains who dare challenge Trelane in his, uh, nursery?

Trelane could chase the Enterprise at warp with a planet. Whose to say he hadn't visited M-113 in the past? Whose to say the Salt Vampire we see in his castle is even real? He recreated the Earth artifacts we saw...

Trelane hunted the species to extinction and kept one as a trophy.
