Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set
Duning's choice of those motifs to re-use, seems to display almost a fan's sense of the contents of those episodes, the relevance of those cues. Compare his interpolation of cues, to Fried & Steiner & Courage & Kaplan. All of them used Courage's Enterprise theme for flyby's, which was required. And then – what? Fried & Steiner & Courage quoted themselves, but only themselves so far as I can tell. Kaplan wrote two entirely distinct scores, with no material shared between them (I think). Isn't Duning unique among the Star Trek composers, in quoting from the others? (Except for the Enterprise theme.) |

![]() I'm glad December 4 is only a week off. I've finally finished saving up for this thing, and plan on ordering it on release day. Of course, that still leaves the week or so for the mailman to bring it to me, but what the hell, I've waited this long. |

Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set
As for Duning, yes, it's possible he watched the show; his "Return to Tomorrow" score was recorded a couple of months after "Mirror, Mirror" aired, and of course he didn't quote "Amok Time" until season 3. But it's also possible he just talked with his fellow composers about what they'd done, or with the producer or the music editor or whatever. Rather than being fannish, it could've simply been part of his process as a composer to compare notes in that way. It's unwise to read fan sentiment into professional work. I'm a Trek fan, of course, but when I write a Trek novel and incorporate ideas from other novels, I don't think of it as an expression of fandom, but as being thorough in my research -- or as saving myself work when I can find an existing idea I can use rather than having to come up with a new one. For all we know, Duning could've simply been so pressed for time that it was easier to ask if there were existing themes that would suit his purposes.

Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set
My main question for Neil is: How do we know that the laserdiscs were accurate to the originals in their audio mix, pitch, etc.? Or are they just the closest approximation available? And when are we going to see the next track list? There are still six discs remaining to cover, and there are only six days left until the release.

Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set
LLL releases the track lists, not me. The opening of "Catspaw" is tracked with the library cue. We have Fried's unused opening and closing. I think one note of his closing is used in the episode! Neil

Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set
I'm really looking forward to finding out how many of the library-only cues are pieces I know. I know there's one cue, a somber one at the end of a third-season episode with no credited original music, that's never heard anywhere else, and I've always wondered what it was from. I figure it must be a library cue. (I can't remember what episode it was, though.)

Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set
![]() I didn't think there was any way that this could be better than I imagined. Actually, I was thinking "Yes, I love the movie scores. And I certainly listen to the TOS scores I have. But do I really want ALL of it? Sure I want all of Where No Man Has Gone Before. And Charlie X, yes. But seriously, 17 hours?" Now I'm thinking "This isn't coming FAST enough!!" The library cues alone are killing me! And those samples on TrekCore sound better than they do in the episodes.

Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set
That's interesting, that we get the 2006 re-recording of the main title in this set. You guys weren't kidding when you said it would be everything. :-) What's a "sweetener"? as in "brass sweetener" & "trombone sweetener" Very interested to hear the Fried rehearsal. Now that the listings of Steiner's music for By Any Other name and Fielding's music for Tribbles have both been posted, what cue is in By Any Other Name during the scene when Scotty & the Kelvan are drunk together? |

Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set
![]() An additional overlay, recorded separately and dubbed in later. In the case of the "trombone sweetener" from Tribbles, they were an effect recorded in real time with the intention of being sped up to get a unique sound. We had the original real time takes and presented one of them on here as a bonus. If you know the score, it's really wild hearing it at the recorded speed.

Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set
Please*/You Listen Harry Mudd Control Room Eternal Beauty/Crew Gone We Are Real A Gilded Cage/Not Programmed Mudd’s Farewell/Stella’s Reprise Love’s Hate Mudd’s Detention There have been two prior releases of music from "The Trouble With Tribbles." The second volume of Steiner-conducted re-recordings from Varese Sarabande included new performances of "A Matter of Pride," "No Tribble at All," and "Big Fite" (spelled "Big Fight"), and GNP's Best of Star Trek Vol. 1 featured 11-odd minutes from the original score. The only previously unreleased tracks from "Tribbles" are: My Chicken Sandwich Raining Tribbles Close That Door The GNP album did contain "The Muzak Maker" and "The Scherzo Maker" even though those were not included in the episode. Typos on the GNP track list: "They Quibble Over Quibble" for "...Over Tribble"; "Barrel of Trouble" for "Barrel of Tribbles"; no exclamation point on "Come On Spock" or "Dead Heap."
On to season 3! Given that there was less new music in that season, it should be interesting to see what fills out the set.
