319. Proof (✩✩✩½) - DVD - A 27 year old woman deals with depression, the recent death of her mentally ill math genius father, a guy and a revolutionary unpublished proof. Stars Gwenyth Paltrow, Anthony Hopkins and Jake Gyllenhaal. It's a complex movie with flashbacks, appearances by a dead father and a lot of complex emotions and actions from our depressed lead. It's good though. I loved Paltrow's character.

320. Dream House (✩✩✩) - DVD - A couple that just moved out of the city with their kids, discovers that a family was murdered in the house they bought and it's causing them some problems. Stars Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz. It started off as a boring wannabe thriller, but about 45 minutes or so in, it suddenly got interesting.

321. Sound of My Voice (✩✩✩✩) - On Demand - Two journalists infiltrate a small cult led by a young woman who claims to be from the future. Stars Brit Marling, who wrote and starred in Another Earth. I really enjoyed this film and highly recommend it. It'll keep you fixated from beginning to end. It's also a film that requires you to pay attention to details and think. Then when you're done, you'll have to eaither watch it again or think about what you just saw.

322. Aquamarine (✩✩½) - Live TV - Two teenage girls find a mermaid in a pool. Stars Emma Roberts and Sara Paxton. It's a teenie movie for young girls. wIt's got lame humor, but it was enjoyable enough as something to have on. I got a kick out of the Aquaman-like abilities that the mermaid commanded.

323. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (✩✩) - Live TV - Good looking movie, but it didn't hold my attention and I didn't enjoy it. Gemma Arterton sure was pretty though.

324. Fierce People (✩✩✩) - Live TV - A slice of life movie where a boy and his mother go out to a guest house in a country estate owned by a rich man she befriended. You'll recognize it as Smallville's Luthor mansion. It had an impressive cast that included Anton Yelchin, Diane Lane, Donald Sutherland, Chris Evans and Kristen Stewart. It was somewhat watchable. I wonder how Yelchin got such a lead role.

133. El Orfanato

A wonderful ghost story that combines suspenseful and touching/tragic moments. The leading actress, Rueda, gives a great performance and the script is very good (in the way that it offers pay off to so many things shown earlier).

Started to watch Immortals with the roommates last night, but quickly lost interest. And they fell asleep on the couch durin' it.

So, not gonna add it to my list, unless I actually try to watch it again.

186. Fatal Attraction (D+)

Fatal Attraction: The fact that this is widely considered the mother of all erotic thrillers has me stumped. The cinematography opts for a murky, almost sepia tone that deprives the proceedings of any eroticism (the aesthetics of the 80s don't help, but that's not the film's fault). Alex Forrest (Glenn Close), often considered one of the best screen villains, is rarely a threat. Only in the re-shot conclusion does she pose any palpable danger to Michael Douglas and his family, but the price of that sequence is the psychological plausibility of her character, as well as a ridiculous false ending resolved when Anne Archer (as Douglas' wife, hardly a character in the movie) gets the last word.

Arthur Christmas - On Demand - I was searching for a holiday movie for the boys to watch while I was putting up the Christmas tree. We usually cut down our own tree but with us living in an apartment, we decided to go with a pre-lit artificial tree from Target. So set up was amazing fast and easy, allowing me to watch most of the movie with the boys.

I was actually surprised at how much I really enjoyed it. I remember when it came out originally and had absouloutly no interest in seeing it. The story is simple and straight forward, but really engaging. The animation and voice acting is superb, with Jim Broadbent as Santa, Bill Nighy as GrandSanta, High Laurie as Steve Christmas and James McAvoy as Arthur. We'll be adding this as a family favorite for future Christmas time viewing.

325. Liz & Dick (✩½) - Live TV - Saw this Lifetime movie last night. Lindsay Lohan made her big comeback in this TV movie about the ups and downs of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's relationship. It started off absolutely dreadful, then got slightly less so as it progressed. For something that was supposed to be a big project, it looked cheap, it had cuts to Lohan and her co-star narrating the movie which didn't work at all, it had obvious green screen shots and a lot of story was excluded or glossed over. I liked Lohan though, or rather I liked the idea that she's back and trying to pull herself together, and she looked great too, not necessarily as Liz, just in general. She's back on my list as a potential Batgirl.

132. Life of Pi (A)

After spending a solid week or so working on two law school papers, I finally have time to see a movie. What a nice break.

Ang Lee takes on Yann Martel's Booker-winning novel, which no doubt required quite a bit of ingenuity to translate to the screen, given its nature. The result is the most superb and assured craft I've yet seen this year; they should probably award the Oscars for cinematography and visual effects right now. Suraj Sharma, who plays the title character, surely has made one of the most difficult acting debuts in recent memory. He pretty much carries the picture, acting for most of his screentime opposite only (very convincing) visual effects (though having as skilled a director as Lee no doubt helps quite a lot).

It's not perfect (I could quibble with pieces of the beginning and end, particularly the very end, which seems almost to glide past the impact of the big reveal), but it's a pretty stunning artistic achievement.

Your Highness: Does someone have incriminating pictures or other info that would cause Natalie Portman to have agreed to be in this film? Did she owe someone a favor? I like her and have found her comedy turns to be mostly well done. James Franco is actually pretty good with comedic elements from Pineapple Express to Green Hornet. I knew Danny McBride was the wild card but still it was the blatantly horrid overly juvenile script that killed this movie. The previews let me know some crude moments would be involved but in context that material can be funny. It was the forced OTT elements that ruined this. I thought Danny McBride just acted the weird childish material he was handed but seeing as how he cowrote this it seems that's just his preference. I couldn't even find something worthwhile in this like other comedies I was mixed on such as Bridesmaids or Cop Out.

Goldeneye: After watching Skyfall recently I had some time over Thanksgiving so I decided to watch the film where Skyfall took some key plot points to use again. While I did like Skyfall and would grade them about the same Goldeneye is a much better film imo. Sean Bean's turncoat is a lot more fun to watch than Silva.
For my count I'm only wanting to include re-watches if I haven't seen them in at least a decade and this one qualifies.

Went to see SLP last night...it was alright, not as good as I had hoped it would be. Some of it was obvious, too.

I dunno...Jennifer Lawrence looked good in it, and Bradley Cooper wasn't terrible, but I'm kinda glad my friend K/C backed out from wantin' to go, so I won't have to see it twice.

Went to see RotG in 3D this evenin' before my shift starts. Cute movie, I think it'd be pretty good for kids, of which there were a few in the theater with their parents. The 3D was well done, which is to be expected for a CGI film. And there's a bonus bit midway through the credits.

Still tryin' to see Lincoln and the Red Dawn remake....and there's a midnight premiere for Killing Them Softly Thursday night.

134. In the Loop

Very funny comedy (with a lot of creative swearing and cursing) about the British and US government and their preparations before declaring a war. The film flows by fast and only once it ended did I notice that there was no soundtrack/no background music, which is unusual but fitted very well here.

133. Sunset Boulevard (A+)

After nearly an hour on various buses to get to the theatre last night, I arrived to find Lincoln sold out. Not impressed. So I bought my ticket for Thursday, and took a cab back home to watch one of my Blu-ray discs that I've yet to look at.

Arguably Billy Wilder's most acclaimed film, which was just released in this format, this is yet another example of Hollywood's love/hate relationship with itself. Some aspects of this film's production are a lot harder to appreciate for modern filmgoers, since it depends very heavily on the subtext of the real histories of so many of the people in the cast, which would be much less recognizable at 60+ years' remove. All the same, a top-notch production. William Holden has a great way with monologues, betweent his and Network.

It's good though. I loved Paltrow's character. 320. Dream House (✩✩✩) - DVD - A couple that just moved out of the city with their kids, discovers that a family was murdered in the house they bought and it's causing them some problems. Stars Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz. It started off as a boring wannabe thriller, but about 45 minutes or so in, it suddenly got interesting. 321. Sound of My Voice (✩✩✩✩) - On Demand - Two journalists infiltrate a small cult led by a young woman who claims to be from the future. Stars Brit Marling, who wrote and starred in Another Earth. I really enjoyed this film and highly recommend it. It'll keep you fixated from beginning to end. It's also a film that requires you to pay attention to details and think. Then when you're done, you'll have to eaither watch it again or think about what you just saw. 322. Aquamarine (✩✩½) - Live TV - Two teenage girls find a mermaid in a pool. Stars Emma Roberts and Sara Paxton. It's a teenie movie for young girls. wIt's got lame humor, but it was enjoyable enough as something to have on. I got a kick out of the Aquaman-like abilities that the mermaid commanded. 323. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (✩✩) - Live TV - Good looking movie, but it didn't hold my attention and I didn't enjoy it. Gemma Arterton sure was pretty though. 324. Fierce People (✩✩✩) - Live TV - A slice of life movie where a boy and his mother go out to a guest house in a country estate owned by a rich man she befriended. You'll recognize it as Smallville's Luthor mansion. It had an impressive cast that included Anton Yelchin, Diane Lane, Donald Sutherland, Chris Evans and Kristen Stewart. It was somewhat watchable. The cinematography opts for a murky, almost sepia tone that deprives the proceedings of any eroticism (the aesthetics of the 80s don't help, but that's not the film's fault). Alex Forrest (Glenn Close), often considered one of the best screen villains, is rarely a threat. Only in the re-shot conclusion does she pose any palpable danger to Michael Douglas and his family, but the price of that sequence is the psychological plausibility of her character, as well as a ridiculous false ending resolved when Anne Archer (as Douglas' wife, hardly a character in the movie) gets the last word. We usually cut down our own tree but with us living in an apartment, we decided to go with a pre-lit artificial tree from Target. So set up was amazing fast and easy, allowing me to watch most of the movie with the boys. I was actually surprised at how much I really enjoyed it. I remember when it came out originally and had absouloutly no interest in seeing it. The story is simple and straight forward, but really engaging. The animation and voice acting is superb, with Jim Broadbent as Santa, Bill Nighy as GrandSanta, High Laurie as Steve Christmas and James McAvoy as Arthur. Liz & Dick (✩½) - Live TV - Saw this Lifetime movie last night. Lindsay Lohan made her big comeback in this TV movie about the ups and downs of Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton's relationship. It started off absolutely dreadful, then got slightly less so as it progressed. For something that was supposed to be a big project, it looked cheap, it had cuts to Lohan and her co-star narrating the movie which didn't work at all, it had obvious green screen shots and a lot of story was excluded or glossed over. I liked Lohan though, or rather I liked the idea that she's back and trying to pull herself together, and she looked great too, not necessarily as Liz, just in general. Life of Pi* (A) After spending a solid week or so working on two law school papers, I finally have time to see a movie. What a nice break. Ang Lee takes on Yann Martel's Booker-winning novel, which no doubt required quite a bit of ingenuity to translate to the screen, given its nature. The result is the most superb and assured craft I've yet seen this year; they should probably award the Oscars for cinematography and visual effects right now. Suraj Sharma, who plays the title character, surely has made one of the most difficult acting debuts in recent memory. He pretty much carries the picture, acting for most of his screentime opposite only (very convincing) visual effects (though having as skilled a director as Lee no doubt helps quite a lot). It's not perfect (I could quibble with pieces of the beginning and end, particularly the very end, which seems almost to glide past the impact of the big reveal), but it's a pretty stunning artistic achievement. Goldeneye: A Your Highness:* Does someone have incriminating pictures or other info that would cause Natalie Portman to have agreed to be in this film? Did she owe someone a favor? I like her and have found her comedy turns to be mostly well done. James Franco is actually pretty good with comedic elements from Pineapple Express to Green Hornet. I knew Danny McBride was the wild card but still it was the blatantly horrid overly juvenile script that killed this movie. The previews let me know some crude moments would be involved but in context that material can be funny. It was the forced OTT elements that ruined this. I thought Danny McBride just acted the weird childish material he was handed but seeing as how he cowrote this it seems that's just his preference. I couldn't even find something worthwhile in this like other comedies I was mixed on such as Bridesmaids or Cop Out. Goldeneye: After watching Skyfall recently I had some time over Thanksgiving so I decided to watch the film where Skyfall took some key plot points to use again. While I did like Skyfall and would grade them about the same Goldeneye is a much better film imo. Sean Bean's turncoat is a lot more fun to watch than Silva. For my count I'm only wanting to include re-watches if I haven't seen them in at least a decade and this one qualifies. __________________ "Picard never hit me." Some of it was obvious, too. I dunno...Jennifer Lawrence looked good in it, and Bradley Cooper wasn't terrible, but I'm kinda glad my friend K/C backed out from wantin' to go, so I won't have to see it twice. Went to see RotG in 3D this evenin' before my shift starts. Cute movie, I think it'd be pretty good for kids, of which there were a few in the theater with their parents. The 3D was well done, which is to be expected for a CGI film. And there's a bonus bit midway through the credits. So I bought my ticket for Thursday, and took a cab back home to watch one of my Blu-ray discs that I've yet to look at. Arguably Billy Wilder's most acclaimed film, which was just released in this format, this is yet another example of Hollywood's love/hate relationship with itself. Some aspects of this film's production are a lot harder to appreciate for modern filmgoers, since it depends very heavily on the subtext of the real histories of so many of the people in the cast, which would be much less recognizable at 60+ years' remove. All the same, a top-notch production. William Holden has a great way with monologues, betweent his and Network.
