La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set

Maybe we'll get the next track listing soon, but I suspect the LLLR guys are having a little downtime while they can, especially given their big score announcements today (Die Hard with a Vengeance, Home Alone 2 (expanded from the Varese deluxe edition) and The Untouchables).

I found it funny that they called this Star Trek release the 800 pound gorilla in the room.

I was right -- "Mirror" and "Name" do both have relatively short scores, shorter than I expected. Although its score did include a couple of never-before-heard library cues by Courage, which I assume will be on disc 5.

None of the original recordings here have been released before as far as I know, but new performances of cues from "Mirror, Mirror" and "By Any Other Name" were on Varese Sarabande's Star Trek Volume Two, conducted by Steiner. Cues from those episodes that have not previously had a version released are:

There's a cue on the VS album called "Rojan's Victory," which I would speculate might be an alternate name for "Rojan Roars," but I can't be sure.

I'm curious about Discs 4 & 5. The Music of Star Trek's scoring schedule list gives no information about "Patterns of Force," which featured a new motif for the Nazis and which credited George Duning as the episode's composer. I wonder, will that motif turn out to be a hitherto-uncredited piece of library music?

I'm amazed at the sound quality of these samples. Even on mp3 they sound magnificent – very "present".

Shocked at how the "Mace Fight" cue from Catspaw interpolates that one motif from Fried's Amok Time score. I never expected that.

That suggests another thing of interest in this release: to see how the composers borrowed from themselves over multiple seasons. I knew Duning had interpolated some Amok Time stuff into his scores, for example Empath, and also some of Steiner's "Black Ship" motifs. But those were allusions to established motifs. This is more like reworking your own old material into something completely different. An interesting process. It helps explain how so many of the scores can sound "different but the same".

As I recall, that was actually stock from Jerry Fielding's score to "The Trouble With Tribbles." The cue is called "A Matter of Pride," and originally accompanied the scene where Scotty explained to Kirk why he'd started the fight with the Klingons. It was used later, including in "By Any Other Name," as a leitmotif for Scotty.

I definately remember that cue being used a few times.

The "By Any Other Name" cues were quite a joy on the re-recording, and the originals are definately going to be a hilight.

I'm reading the episode names, and I already have music running through my head from those episodes.

It seems the amount of library music is monumental for season 2 so far.

The real treat for me personally is going to be Elaan of Troyus for Season 3.
