First impressions:
- Very small package, GOOD!
- What the hell, I can't read the menu it's too small on my 32" set??? Why did they do it that small while the whole frame is pratically empty. This is ridiculous (ly stupid)!!!
- This light is very critical (bad) on TNG, very bright on one half of the face and very dark on the other one. The blu-ray version seems to make this even worse. Is this only my TV or do others have the same impression.
- I was rather disappointed on the special features of disc 1.

So far I am not (positively) impressed, still having to (really) watch the episodes themselves.

Question: What episode is the visually most impressive?

I'm not sure what you mean by the bad light. Personally, I think all the episodes I've watched so far look fantastic. What kind of TV do you have?

What kind of tv set do you have? I've had no issues with text size, or the lighting issues you've mentioned. Perhaps your set isn't calibrated properly?

Bad light: The light is usually coming from the side leaving one side of the face high lighted and the other side of the face is rather in the dark with a very strong contrast on the face. It's where they put the light and with what intensity and focus. Often the background is very dark too. Maybe my TV is badly adjusted, although I find it more annoying with TNG than other shows on DVD/BD.

I have a 32 inch HD TV set from LG. And there, the menus are VERY small (I can't read them from 3 meters distance) while the frame is 90% empty (only background image in the center). Apparently one should have a 50 inch TV to enjoy the blu-rays.

Are you referring to the low-key lighting in this shot here:

If so, the look is intentional -- that's how it was lit by the cinematographer in 1987. Compare what you're seeing to TrekCore's TNG screencaps. You're HDTV should be calibrated to look very much like what you see there. If you have a Blu-ray with a THX optimizer, you could calibrate your set using that and it should get you pretty close to where you need to be brightness and contrast-wise.

To be honest, I do think the issue lies with the calibration of your set - I find the PQ on these dsics to be truly outstanding. Do you have your set on "Vivid" or "Torch" mode etc? DO NOT use these!!! Switch to "Cinema" or whatever it may be called on your TV - probably set colour temp to warm if you have that option, but that depends on the characteristics of your set. Then calibrate from there - I recommend something like DVE...

Ok, I had it on "vivid" no one "standard" or "Cinema" it's better. Nevertheless, I don't like the lighting style of this season (just watched "Where no-one has gone before") with very dark background light and rather bright focussed light coming from one side. Exemple are :



You see very often these kind of shadows on the faces which I find rather annoying. But OK, maybe it just me.

Come on, watch it really on your 32" from 3 meters away and look especially on the episode names on the right menu (black on yellowish background). Do you really find this text size well adapted for the human eye?

A psychiatrist, why? It was a serious suggestion - perhaps you are straining your eyes and need them correcting - I cannot see those titles without my spectacles.

If you think that making the menu text smaller to have more surface practically empty is a reasonable choice, and all you have say to that criticism is "verify your glasses", then you are not looking for a constructive discussion.
