Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set

The release order is neither production nor broadcast order. Are the scores sorted by composer?

We've got our first entirely unreleased score here; as far as I know, nothing from "The Man Trap" has been released before. Previously unreleased cues from "The Naked Time" include:

Out of Glove
Breaking Planet/Sweaty Palm/Itchy Hand
Pulled Down/It Spreads
Joe Goes
Up the Rebels

The track here called "D'Artagnan-san" was previously released under the title "D'Artagnan." Some of the cues were combined differently on the GNP album; "D'Artagnan" and "Banana Farm" were combined, "Hot Skin" (mislabeled "Hot Sun") was on the same track as "Off the Cloud," and "Time Reverse/Future Risk" were separate from the end title cue. Also the trailer music was included at the start of the program; putting it at the end is probably more correct, since it was the preview for the following week's episode. (I wonder if there are any other trailers that had music composed specifically for them. Oh, wait, it says right there that there's a "Man Trap" trailer included!)

It'll be nice to have the full "Naked Time" score at last. It always disappointed me that the GNP release cut off after "Brass Monkeys" and didn't do the whole score for the teaser. And "Up the Rebels" must be the big statement of Kevin Riley's theme as he wandered the corridors, another notable omission.

Terrific!

So is what's listed on the GNP The Naked Time as Brass Monkeys really the trailer to Mudd's Women? And what is really Brass Monkeys?

No, it really is "Brass Monkeys" -- it's just that the trailer comes before it on the list. The trailer is track 9, "Brass Monkeys" is track 10, etc.

"Small Planet Visit/The Changeling M10/M11" should be a joy, if that's the cue played during the Nancy illusion tempting Green into following her scene. Lovely mix of seduction and dramatic music.

Anybody up for some quick intros at the Egyptian on 12/3? Nothing fancy; just to place some faces with (TrekBBS screen) names.

I've never coordinated anything like this before; open to suggestions. I just know I'll be there -- and plenty early to get a good seat so it sounds like we'd have plenty of time!

Lukas, Jeff, MV, Matt and I all recorded an interview with Daniel Schweiger for his show On the Score. I think it'll be available around November 26. We talk all about this set. I'm sure you'll all enjoy it.

I'll let you know when it's available.

Indysolo,

Could these be presented in recording date order?

I guess we'll see what the logic is when we see the listings for discs 3 thru 5.

Then I suspect we'll get a sense of patterns.

Nope, if they were in recording order, then "Charlie X" (8/29/66) would be between "The Man Trap" (8/19) and "The Naked Time" (8/31). I think they must be grouped by composer, at least within each season. For season 1, counting the pilots, that'd be 4 by Courage, 6 by Steiner, and one each by Kaplan, Mullendore, and Fried. Since a couple of Steiner's scores were partial, maybe discs 3 & 4 will be Steiner and disc 5 will be the other guys.

Composer, then production maybe?

With miscellaneous and other material on the last 1 or 2 disks. Perhaps the Remastered re-recordings of the season's main and end titles starting and ending CD 5 of each season.

We'll happily find out ...

Ooooh, the Steiner scores now.

And a little bit of Wilbur Hatch there. Didn't expect that little nugget. Well, it certainly is comprehensive.

Discs 4 and 5 will be very interesting to see.

Re: La-La Land to release 15-disc original series score set

Okay, this is the first release of the original recordings for "Charlie" and "Mudd," but both were featured on the first Varese Sarabande album with new performances of TOS music conducted by Steiner. Cues here that were not included on the VS album include:

"Charlie X":
Space Orbit/Charlie X/That's a Girl
Zap the Antares
Kirk's Command #2/Chess Game
Kirk Puzzled
Zap the Pistol
Standoff
Kirk Waits/Charlie in Control
Charlie’s Mad
Zap the Broad

"Mudd's Women":
Distant Spaceship/Hint of Danger
Still in Danger
Venus Walks
Exit Mr. Mudd/Venus Aboard #2/Strange Glances
Eve to Magda/Mudd Plan/Mudd’s Perfidy
Dwindling Power
Planet Rigel #2
Eve Is Tired
Back in Orbit

The other three were on GNP's The Best of Star Trek Volume 2, although the first VS album also includes a version of "Corbomite" that uses the identical track selections as the GNP album many years later. Previously unreleased cues:

"Corbomite Maneuver":
Space Cube/Condition Alert
Quiet Cube
Fesarius
Hideous Balok

"Balance of Terror":
The Enterprise
Romulan Agitato
Romulan B.G.
Romulan Theme
Theme From Star Trek*

"Little Girls":
Android Kirk
Ruk Attacks (1)
Ruk Attacks (2)

Also the Desilu ID is new, of course.

A couple of the cues are in a different order on the VS album and on the GNP album. Also there are a couple of typos on the GNP: "Enter Andrea" is given as "Meet Andrea" and "Ruk Protect" is called "Ruk Protests." "In the Chapel" from BoT is listed as "In Chapel" and is separate from the rest of the BoT suite.

I'm surprised at how short the BoT score is. I knew it was partial, but I didn't realize just how little new music there was. On the other hand, it turns out there are more unreleased "Corbomite" cues than I'd thought; I figured there were only 2-3 of them, but it's four, half the total. I'll be really glad to have the whole thing at last, along with the rest.

I'm also particularly looking forward to getting the original "Charlie's Mystery" cue. The second half of that, a rising/falling clarinet motif which was tracked only a few times in season 1, is one of my favorite cues, but the version on the VS album is played far more slowly than it was in the original episode, for some reason, even though it's still Steiner conducting.

Okay, so Disc 3 encompasses Steiner's first three sessions and five episodes. All that's left in season 1 are "The Conscience of the King" by Joseph Mullendore, "Shore Leave" by Gerald Fried, and "The City on the Edge of Forever" by Steiner -- plus assorted source music like Uhura's songs, the "lounge mix" of the Courage theme heard in a couple of party scenes, and the harpsichord music from "The Squire of Gothos." I wonder how they'll break down and what other extras will be on Disc 5.
