Letting the heroes take the back seat every now and then is good storytelling, too, at least beyond the 1950s standards.
Sure, if they’re taking the back seat to something interesting, which is not the case here. Lower Decks is a very good episode in which the regulars take the back seat. Too Short a Season is not.

I liked the story it had a sorta theme to it....had Jamerson just stuck with the single does of the drug he had, and not down both doses, and so quickly, he would have still be alive, I think.

...Sticking to rules and regulations would have saved lives there, yes. Had the episode played out this way but with Kirk as the Starfleet guest character, this would have been a blatant "Picard is a better man than Kirk" kind of event, perhaps raising audience ire rather than indifference.

Oh the trolling and flame wars this episode would have caused if Kirk had been involved... it would have been glorious!

Doesn't seem like it, from a brief Google search.

I liked this episode. It was very TNG-ish. The shot of Jameson in the conference lounge in the shadow while stars are flying by was a great piece of directing.

No one's mentioned this about the episode... Jameson's wife is Happy Gilmore's grandma!

I wonder how heavily the script was rewritten from what may have been offered to Shatner (though has that ever been formally confirmed?). If it was just a case of name substitution you'd have to wonder how they'd thought they'd get him to do a story that would have painted his character in a fairly bad light considering the famous ego.

Mind, getting him on board might not have been helped by it not being a very good script. And the old age make up didn't look very good to me in SD, so it's probably unfair to blame the Blu Rays for how bad it looks now.
