The last of the David Lean epics that I hadn't seen (apart from Ryan's Daughter, but that's been quietly forgotten by most people), on the big screen at the Cineplex. Definitely a remarkable piece of filmmaking. I'd be interested to know what Lean would be doing with today's CGI technology.

128. More Than Honey

A documentary about bee keeping around the world. It was quite good, although the topic it was supposedly about (the bees dying) was handled only sporadically.

Brave - Blu Ray - I really wanted to love this movie more then I did, unfortunately for me it was a let down. While I think the movie started strong, it got really muddled in the middle, but the end almost saves it. The movie is breath taking to behold, the textures and details are so rich and vibrant. I loved listening to Scottish accents, except Billy Connolly, there are other Scottish actors they could have used, his schtick is getting old. He's like the Scottish Robin Williams.

129. Astérix et Obélix: Au service de sa Majesté

Overall an enjoyable film, definitely better than the last one. I didn't care much for Astérix having a midlife crisis and they again tried to combine several books without really connecting their stories, but otherwise a lot of fun.

129. Funny Face (C+)

Another Audrey Hepburn feature, in vibrant technicolour this time. The technicolour is the best part, really. Funny Face contrasts poorly with the earlier projects of all involved, notably Hepburn and director Stanley Donen. The film practically orgasms with colour location footage from Paris, akin to what William Wyler did with Roman Holiday, but it's not used anywhere near as well. There's no chemistry between Hepburn and Fred Astaire, who's about twice her age and looks it (despite his admittedly still fancy footwork), and it's hard to overlook the condescending sexist element in their interactions. It's not without strengths: Hepburn is winning as ever, there's a decent amount of good humour and beautiful imagery, and Donen knows how to choreograph a dance number (although they're sadly unsupported by memorable music).

La Haine: The worst thing that can be said about this film is that it brought Mathieu Kassovitz to Hollywood's attention. Unlike the two awful films he directed for Hollywood studios, however, this film is masterful. Great direction, script, performances, camerawork, and editing.

Throw Mama From the Train: A passable comedic version of Strangers on a Train. Danny Devito's man-child character is probably the draw here; Billy Crystal is mostly just there. A pre-Star Trek Kate Mulgrew is good as his horrible ex-wife, though.

Horrible Bosses: For my money, this is still a very funny movie, and a better comedic take on Strangers on a Train than the above film. The extended version is nothing but improvised padding, though -- I'll stick with the theatrical version whenever I decide to revisit this.

Skyfall: It's a shame all the praise of this movie has taken the form of dog-piling on Daniel Craig's previous two Bond films. This is a very satisfying action movie, with a terrific climax, but I still prefer Craig's debut, and am disappointed that the Quantum plot line was dropped from those earlier films. The film also represents a bit of a return to formula; the villains plans in Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace were over-the-top, but believable. Here, Javier Bardem is a solid villain but his threat of cyber-terrorism is pure fantasy (apparently, everything -- from cell doors to heating units -- is hooked up to the MI6 computer).

Got together with my friend K/C to see Argo this afternoon. Her first time seein' it, my second.

Went up to a different theater from there to see The Sessions. I thought the movie was alright, but a bit too clinical...? I dunno...the whole story seemed kinda detached to me. It wasn't necessarily bad, but not really something I would watch again, either.

Found it on Netflix Instant tonight, decided to watch it. 'cause why not, right?

Dear god, that was a bad movie, even by early '80s standards.

Watchin' the Footloose remake now...not sure why. Nothin' about it so far can hold a candle to the Kevin Bacon original.

William Friedkin has had a very odd directorial career. With a few films of buildup in the late 60s, he won Best Director in 1971 for The French Connection, followed that up with The Exorcist, since then has done a variety of mediocre studio movies and fiercely uncommercial endeavours. Here, we've got an NC-17 (18A, in Canada) black comedy about one of the most irredeemable collections of people I've ever seen, featuring terrific work from Matthew McConaughey as the psycho title character.

Though through the screening I attended, I was distracted by the presence of a 70something woman, who, on leaving the theatre when the movie was over, remarked "I didn't know it was gonna be like that", which just raises the question of what she thought the movie was like.

Indo-Canadian director Deepa Metha adapts Sir Salman Rushdie's Booker-winning novel (with Rushdie working on the screenplay and providing narration). It's okay, but I think that the things that really make Rushdie's books stand out (his prose style, especially) don't translate well to film.

310. The Seeker: The Dark is Rising (✩½) - Live TV - A kid is the chosen one and must save the day from ancient dark forces or some-such. It's a terrible movie. Ian McShane is in it but I only decided to check it out because of Amelia Warner. I wish she was in more stuff. Turns out she was never legally married to Colin Farrell. At least that's what I read. Nothing to do with the movie, I just thought that was more interesting.

311. Astro Boy (✩✩✩✩) - Blu-ray - Saw this recent CGI motion picture that was based on the anime. As I was watching, the animation was so crisp that I thought for the first time that Astro Boy could work as a live action project without knowing that it was in fact intended to be a live-action film in the initial stages of planning. Anyway, I loved the voice work from big names like Nicolas Cage, Charlize Theron, Bill Nighy, Eugene Levy and Donald Sutherland. The story was also a pretty good one. It dealt with issues such as elitism and class. It also had some political undertones that apparently angered people (negative "red"energy vs positive "blue" energy).

312. Source Code (✩✩✩✩) - DVD - I don't want to say too much because so much unfolds from the get-go, but I thought this was a pretty good thriller with some intriguing scifi elements. If you're a scifi fan and you haven't seen this one, it's worth a look. It stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Jeffrey Wright and Vera Farmiga, and it's a mix of Quantum Leap and the TNG episode "Cause & Effect".

130. Skyfall

Well, it was beautifully shot (especially the ending) and Bardem was fun to watch most of the time, but otherwise I thought it was just a good film (admittedly, I'm not a big fan of the Bond films in general).
