I just watched the extended trailer. It looks very ambitious and could either be very good or very bad. I might check this book out sometime (although I have far too many books on my "to read" list as it is).

Saw it yesterday and will definitely see it again while it's in theaters. Complex and beautiful and amazing! It didn't feel like 3 hours at all. And while there's not any special material added to the credits, it's well worth while to stay and see all the parts played by the cast. Age, gender, race are all subject to change.

I thought the film was fantastic!

I think they excised a few parts of the book that they shouldn't have, though. The book goes more in depth as to what is so special about Sonmi-451. After speaking to a few people who had seen the movie and not read the book, and perhaps are not quite up on the sci-fi cinematic language as many of us probably are, I think they lost part of that story. A lot of people have just been saying that Sonmi was special, maybe because she was destined to be, without really being able to articulate why. I think the movie should have kept much more of the explanation of Sonmi achieving sentience, memory and emotion in ways that she wasn't supposed to, and how that was vastly different from other fabricants.

Minor quibble, though. The film wasn't about narrative or story, or even character, per se. It was about theme and meaning, a brave choice and something entirely new in mainstream Western filmmaking. This film deserves to win Oscars for screenwriting and editing...as the film so deftly combines six narratively unrelated stories but makes them empty without each other, while intermingling within each other at the most perfect, complex and necessary times.

I'll go against the crowd and say that I've rarely watched a more horrible movie. *shrugs*

This movie blew me away. A narrative containing six different stories should feel incredibly disjointed, especially when the connections are tenuous. This managed it, though. Each story was just as engaging as the next. I was never annoyed when they cut away to a different story because I was interested in every single one of them. And the makeup, oh man the makeup. If any other film wins the Oscar for makeup this year, it will be a travesty. This is one of my favorites of the year, and I certainly need to go see it again.

It's decent. Some of the changes made to condense the story work fine, others try to make it more "Hollywood" and lose some of the original's appeal (particularly pronounced in the Sonmi and Zachry stories).

Jim Broadbent (the most convincing multi-part player in the cast) and Bae Doona were the cast standouts. I'm not sure Tom Hanks or Halle Berry really have the kind of chameleon quality this sort of film calls for (though Hanks as a Cockney thug isn't something I'd ever expected to see).

Saw this saturday night. made the mistake of getting up at 5 am and going to a 10pm 3 hour long movie. Going to need to see it again. Hank's accents were pretty mumbled and it's tough to pick out the "true true" Future Language. Maybe with time this will become something special

Same here. I was surprised when some people said it was hard to follow if you hadn't read the book. I haven't read the book and I was able to follow it quite easily. It just took a little time getting used to the future speak, but even that became second nature after a while.

The narratives themselves were actually pretty straightforward, and it wasn't hard to keep track of them at all.

So is it true that all of Hugo Weaving's roles in this film are actually...

I think that's an oversimplification, but all of his characters were villainous in one way or another.
