This makes the most sense to me. I like to think that Archer getting his ass so thoroughly trounced is part of what led to Starfleet expanding its physical training programmes to include stuff like Sisko's wrestling team.

I was actually poking fun at the "he was the first captain!" excuse everyone else uses for Archer's other faults.

I like that everyone aboard Enterprise is an astronaut and their main field (pilot, engineer, doctor, etc.) and not a fighter. By the end of season 2, they learn the universe is out there to kick their butts.

So, actually it seems only Reed is a decent fighter until the MACOs join.
