I heard a lot of that, as a starry-eyed new fan, with ST:TMP, then ST II, and then ST IV ("dumbing down for the masses"), then TNG and ST V!

After becoming a Trek fan in 1980, I started reading some older fan materials and realised that some people had also hated Season Three of TOS and Filmation's TAS for similar reasons, and with the same intensity.

Hating new ST is apparently nothing new, but it always seems at odds for a show that espoused "infinite diversity in infinite combinations" (IDIC).

Mostly, I choose to hang with fans who have a positive outlook like my own, and we manage to enjoy most of what we see. If it's bad (eg. ST V) we see it a few times and have a laugh, and if it's good we see it lots.

I couldn't care less about the name of the planet -- it could be Earth for all I care. It's the entire storyline that took place between Kirk getting stranded on Delta Vega and him beaming out that's stupid.

Rest of the movie? Not as good as Expendables. Better than Speed II. I'll watch it, though.

Huh? Kirk gets chases by some creatures. Gets rescued by OldSpock. Finds out about Nero and how OldSpock got to the past. Gets a little pep talk from OldSpock. Meets Scotty who with a little help OldSpock get them back to the Enterprise.

Not seeing the "stupid".

I don't remember Kirk running pass any trees on his way to the cave.

Spock is the perfect boy scout, he knows he may need to rub sticks together so at any time he has some really big ones handy. You saw how big his furs were, he probably had them on his person all along.

(I also noticed some wood panelling in the buildings on Vulcan, and I haven't seen a Vulcan tree since "Yesteryear")

The trees would be in the direction Spock came from.
