My complaint, voiced in plenty of other threads, is that - to me - it looked like exactly what it was: a brewery. I agree up to a point, but I don't buy your McDonalds analogy, though it would make SF films a lot cheaper to make.

I never saw the infamous concrete in the Kelvin for example (God knows how many times you have to watch it to spot that sort of thing!). But when you see something that you either know what it really is, or just blatantly doesn't belong, it can be jarring. For me it was those stainless steel vats complete with drainage caps and chains!

Yeah Obviously it was VHS/DVD or whatever for those movies. It'll be Netflix for ST2013. But I don't really know if it's really a dig on the Star Trek movies .. I don't think much at all is worth me dropping dime at a theater, driving there, parking, making sure I've peed, etc. Too much hassle and expense unless it's really, really, good like LOTR. ST09 is okay. I've watched it about 20 times, just like 7-10 and I'll prolly watch the new one about that many times -- cause I like Star Trek. On my big screen TV though, where I can somewhat enjoy it.

I prefer the explanation from the as-yet-unreleased novel To Seek a Newer World...

That "Delta Vega" is a generic name given to planets owned by the Delta-Vega (as in, Delta IV and Vega colony) Mining Corporation.

Although the simplest explanation, that it's simply a resued name (in the same way thousands of towns and cities on earth are endlessly duplicated), is good too.

I very much like the explanation behind the spoiler tag.

It also neatly takes care of planets being named with earth words.. yes I know the word Vulcan is an earth word but it's still nice to have a good reason for it not having Vulcan names. I also like seeing some commercial enterprises in use.

TOS/TAS had two Arrets: Sargon's planet of origin ("Return to Tommorrow") and Karla Five's homeworld ("The Counter-clock Incident").

TAS had Edos and TNG had the Edo.

There are several species of Rigellians/Rigelians and lots of Rigels.

I'm sure there are other similar duplications.
