How often does this happen?
A lot. Weeds, Battlestar Galactica, Dollhouse, Lost, The X-Files, etc.
Huh? Aside from the random coda at the very end of the episode, BSG's finale took place in the same time as the rest of Season 4. Lost's entire final season jumped back and forth between reality and "afterlife," but the main events of the finale took place in the present day. And The X-Files finale also took place during the present day of Season 9. There was no large jump into the future.

All of these shows had glimpses into the future, etc.

Re: Are you for or aganist...

The X-Files did not. The entire episode takes place in the present day.

Besides, I'm pretty sure that's not what the OP meant anyway.

Let me clear for all those viewing this thread, I am talking about series finales that take place ENTIRELY in the future.

I thought it worked when they did it on Dawson's Creek.

They did do it in Voyager, but that future ended up in the oblivion file when it was undone by the Voyager crew's umpteenth temporal revision.

Not sure of this one, but iirc, Will and Grace's finale took place in the future for the most part. It worked out pretty well . Loved it. It was one of those finales which was just as good as any regular episode, funny and well written.

I believe Mad About You pulled a similar stunt.
