Am I misremembering something, or was there a "Great Goblin" design that came out at some point which looked nothing like that?

First look at the Goblin King

It's just the action figure, but it gives us a good idea what he will look like in the movie.
Cool, that does look like the thing that falls on the Dwarves in the second trailer right at the end though!
Yeah, I'm pretty sure that's the Goblin King at the end of the second trailer.

New character scroll poster (click for 4000x535 version):

I wouldn't mind having that on my wall.

That poster definitely hints at some of the more humorous elements to the story. It's interesting to see how the marketing is trying to walk the line between the "epic" nature of LOTR and the more lighthearted elements of The Hobbit. Of course, the real trick will be if the film itself successfully merges both approaches.

Just noticed that this is the year of ensemble cast events. Avengers, Expendables, The Hobbit. If that trend continues, we'll have films with two dozen main characters.

Just saw this on the Total Film website and confirmed it via TheOneRing.net: The first movie will be getting an extended edition release in late 2013! I guess we really are looking at something on the scale of the original trilogy, then.

I don't see how anyone can be surprised by this news, of course there were going to be EEs for this one too...

Yeah, after the success they had with the LOTR EEs I'm not at all surprised.
