No it's not the most exciting teaser trailer ever, but I do at least like the slightly more grounded and realistic tone.

Thankfully, at least so far, it looks more like just a straightforward action movie, and not another ridiculous and overblown CGI mess like the Pirates sequels.

Of course I realize this is Bruckheimer and Verbinski, so there's still a very good chance it'll end up that way...

I think you can count on it, if early reports are any indication.

Yikes! Did this movie really need to cost 250 million to make?

^Well, they did have to pay Depp.

That trailer looks like a great movie except for the guy in the mask and the goofy indian.

Jury's still out. The trailer didn't look bad, but it didn't look great; at least it's not like the Dark Shadows trailer.

People want to see Depp doing some zany schitck, they don't want a lecture on the social perils of 19th C railroads.
Actually, I would prefer the latter, and it would make for a better Lone Ranger movie.
I was referring less to quality/intellgience of the movie than to what's going to put butts in seats. if they want to make a serious Western about the railroads, why cast Jonny Depp at all, much less give him crazy makeup and a crazier chapeau? That alone says "this is POTC in the Wild West." But the trailer doesn't say that at all.

Mixed messages might indicate a serious disconnect between the director and the marketing campaign, or perhaps a movie that's not going to deliver what Depp's fans want.

I'm no fan of the POTC movies, I stopped watching them after the first one, but they have been extremely successful and I'm certain Disney expects this movie to have a lot of the same appeal. That's why this movie has the star and the director that it has.

^^ I know, but what puts butts in seats generally does not make for a good movie.

Mixed messages is one way to interpret this, but I see in this trailer the earmarks of a movie trying to be all things to all people. I'll hold off deciding if I'm going to see this (translation: I'll hold off deciding how hard I'll try to talk my significant other out of seeing it), but I must say it doesn't look promising. I almost burst out laughing when I heard Tonto speak in stereotypical and clichéd article-free grammar, except it was too pathetic to even laugh at. I may have dozed off during American Civilization, but I didn't know that The Lone Ranger was about railroads anyway.

While not everything that puts butts in seats is a good movie, many that do are. Movies have always been designed as entertainment. If they are entertaining, they'll bring people.

It's funny. I watched the old Clayton Moore show religiously when I was ten, but I honestly can't remember the plot of a single episode, only the opening. "Come with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear . . . ."

At this late date, I think I remembr the Bill Cosby routine better. "Tonto, go to town."

^^ Well, there was that episode where Tonto got hit on the head and knocked out.

I said "Generally." There certainly are exceptions.

Er, did anyone really expect The Lone Ranger to be "a serious western about railroads"?

It's a remake of a classic radio show, Kemo Sabe!

That's like expecting The Shadow to be a serious psychological exploration of the evil that lurks in the hearts of men . . . .

I don't know if it's a SAG thing as much as it is a contractual thing. Or it might just be "first bill the guy who supposedly puts asses in the seats."
I can't pretend to be an expert on SAG rules, but this doesn't sound like one of them. It's probably a contractual thing; Depp is a big star and no doubt his contract has language giving him both top billing and billing above the title.

Looking at the stills on the Empire site, I was kind of excited to see one from a scene I was an extra in.. That said, I was in the other train (which wasn't in the picture)... LOL...

Yes, I'll admit it.. The $177.00 I got for a day's work is what put the budget over the top..
