"James Bond 23" officially slated for 2012!

Heard the sample HERE. Apparently, the full theme's going to be released officially on Friday.

Really psyched for it--it truly invokes the classic themes of the Connery era, but with a "modern" vibe. Rather like the better Pierce Brosnan themes.

Is it just me, or is she kind of invoking...Amy Winehouse?

Hmm. No Thomas Newman credit on the recording sheet - probably not going to hear quotes from it in the score like Tomorrow Never Dies (well, from the real song) or Casino Royale, then.

I get what you mean regarding Tomorrow Never Dies and the fact that it refers often to the "Surrender" track by k.d. lang more than it does Sheryl Crow's actual theme, but the Casino Royale score "quotes" "You Know My Name" all over the place in that movie.

...yes, that's what I was trying to say had happened in those films - and by contrast it looks like that won't happen with Skyfall.

Well, we don't know that for certain yet. It's entirely possible it could go either way. Just because Newman isn't credited on the song's sheet music cover page doesn't necessarily mean he didn't contribute to it or that he won't lift from or refer to it with his score. We'll find out when the full album is out in November.

That's because David Arnold had a hand in both Surrender, and You Know My Name. With Surrender actually being intended as the title song until the very last minute.

Thomas Newman by comparison, has not worked on Skyfall with Adele. Now that doesn't mean it won't pop up in his score, but in the past if the composer didn't work on the song it doesn't show up in the film (Licence to Kill, Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, and Quantum of Solace all being the prime examples).

You'll find out. I was willing to buy David Arnold's albums sight-unseen, but I'm waiting until after I see the movie to pick Skyfall up.

Didn't TLD do the same?

If I remember, The Pretenders' song was in the movie the movie (both the song itself and as a cue) more than the a-Ha song was.

The Pretenders did two songs for The Living Daylights.

"Where Has Everybody Gone?" was used primarily as the basis for Necros' theme in the film.

"If There Was A Man" was the mined for the love theme for Bond and Kara.

a-ha's "The Living Daylights" was obviously used as the basis for Bond's "action theme" in conjunction with the actual Bond theme we all know and love.

In each case, John Barry collaborated with both The Pretenders and a-ha to create the score he did.

Also: for those interested, La-La Land Records re-released a new edition of the soundtrack to The Golden Child by John Barry last year. It's a three-disc set, so it's somewhat price-y but it is unmistakably Barry-esque and as such sounds a whole hell of a lot like a "lost" James Bond score. Quite enjoyable too, so if you're big on Bond soundtracks and John Barry's work in particular, it might be worth checking out.

Sounds interesting. I've never seen The Golden Child, but I hear it's pretty terrible.
