Went to Ikea today, I seriously needed some light in my flat!

Got two sets of these Dioder and one set of these (but after having put them up I now know that I'll need one more of those as well)

And while there I picked up a few other odds and ends...

Thank you for reminding me that I bought a floor lamp there a while ago, and it's still sitting in its box...

Thank you for reminding me that I bought a floor lamp there a while ago, and it's still sitting in its box...

My desk (that doubles as a dining table), chair and desk lamp, two cupboards and two sets of lamps -just in this room- are also from that shop

But the odds and ends of today are: a cheese-grater ("Strålande"), a stainless steel travel-mug, a stainless steel 'basket' (I'm gong to hang on the wall so my hand-soap doesn't need to stand on a surface) and a stainless steel dish-rack.

Oh, and a set of bed-linen.

If we'd gone in a bigger car* I would've picked up lots more (big flower pots at off-season prices ), a small table/cupboard/shelves-combo for my very cramped 'hall', some colourful bed-side rugs...

I did, indeed. Assembling it is what makes it fun. And, more importantly, affordable.

Rental bikes with trailers? That is so coo!. I can't imagine them trying that in the US.

Actually, we tend more towards German-glish...but my own experience can best be described thus: "Lady, I only speak two languages, English and bad English!" - Bruce Willis in The Fifth Element

Me, I am very bad at following assembly directions. If I am given the manual to build, say, an Ikea desk, I'd probably end up with a bird house...

^Now, that is a problem! -not reading the directions is usually the best way to not do anything wrong.

Ikea-directions are the exception that confirm this rule: if you don't read those you are in deep...

If Ikea directions are as tough to figure out as I hear they are, I would be completely lost. I give up too easily.

But they're not!

Most problems people get themselves into while assembling Ikea-stuff -in my experience- is that they think it looks simple enough and just begin without 'reading' the instructions.

They invariably get into trouble at some point and then refer to the instructions. This is the point when they realise they are totally lost -usually because they did things in the wrong order (as they didn't follow instructions) and are not able to continue assembling because things that interlock cannot... mostly because they weren't assembled in the right order...

Best job-skill-test ever: assemble a piece of Ikea-furniture from a flat-pack! It shows if people are able to read simple instructions and if they are capable of following instructions, it shows if people have patience and if they have too many thumbs

^Yup. Helps to watch what you're doing, too. A friend of mine put together an Ikea bookcase last week -- twice. First time, he put the shelves (not the removable kind) in backwards, so the unfinished edges faced out. Had to take the bookcase almost completely apart to correct it.
