Speaking of the blu-rays, what are the commentaries like? Do they completely blank out the episode audio, or does it fade in and out between comments?
There are no commentaries on the first season.

Well Damn! Finally had the time to hook up the new Blu-Ray palyer this morning. Turns out our 9 year old Mitsubishi HD TV doesn't have an HDMI port. Had to settle for the composite video connection (yellow RCA jack) and the lower resolution that goes with it. Anybody know of a converter from HDMI to RGB that might give us HD resolution? Just a thought.

You're doing yourself a HUGE disservice if you don't go out and get a TV with HDMI (or component at the very least). Running through composite defeats the entire purpose! Good luck.
Are there TV's getting cheaper with the HDMI ports these days? Everything is either flatscreen or the highest quality now (LCD, LED, Plasma) but I'm going to be in a position (Hopefully in a few years) where I will need to buy a Blu-Ray player and TV and wonder how expensive that will be.
A few months ago I was still watching DVD's on a 20" standard resolution TV. We splashed out nearly £800 on our Blu-ray/HD/3D set-up, solely for the purpose of this Blu-ray release! Don't think we'd have bothered otherwise. Star Trek has always made the technological decisions for me.

Commercial content deleted by Mutai. It is against board rules to try to sell stuff. Read the rules!

Many thanks,
James

Thanks to all the people who offered advice and counsel on my problem with Blu-Ray and the HD TV lacking HDMI. I found an HDMI to RGB converter on Amazon for $60 and it has done the trick. I can't testify that what I'm getting is full 1080, but the image quality is noticible superior to what I was getting using the single jack component connection. The Lady Sho-Rin and I watched Farpoint last night and were both entertained by the show and delighted by the look of it.

It's like finding out you won the lottery, isn't it?

Okay, maybe not...

I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet but I thought the included postcard with the replacement discs was a nice touch.

I have to confess: I am a little bit dissappointed. I didnt expect so much strong grain in the image, since it was shot in a well lit studio athmosphere.
Wendy Ruiz: The quality of the film does change a little bit between Season 1 and Season 3. In Season 1 the material generally had a lot more grain (and it was a different DP) than we are noticing now in Season 3. So far, for Season 3 [the film has] been in a lot better condition than Season 1. Craig Weiss: I can’t speak specifically, but I know they did change film-stocks – they got better, because when they used the higher ASA [film speed] stocks, if they didn’t have enough light it would get grainy. And I know as time went on, the stocks got better which reduced the amount of grain – as Wendy was saying – and the color looks better, and it improves throughout the seasons.

Well, that explains it.

"Better" film stock this, "better" film stock that – I still say the first two seasons look vastly better, more cintematic and more interestingly set up as the rest of the series.

This has always been my opinion as well. Somehow, little or no film grain makes the image look "flatter" or less real.

I submit that it's a drastic change in lighting style rather than film stock or grain level that makes the later seasons look so different.

I'm talking about movies and TV in general
