That's what I was thinking, too.

Mrs Frederic said she would've known if something was wrong with someone so this opens up a lot of questions.

I think she specifically said Claudia, because she seems to be grooming Claudia as her replacement.

Were those glasses Mrs. F put on (while at the vatican library) also an artifact, or did she have goo infused into the lenses so she could look safely at the framed painting?

My guess is they were artifact proof like the Escher Vault glasses.

That was my interpretation of her reaction as well. She definitely saw something that freaked her out, and since there was nothing noticeably different on the surface, so it must have been something no one else could see.

I'm going to disagree. I would rather her remain a mystery. Just let her be awesome. Maybe see an early story... but I don't know if I really want to know her "origin."

A lot of fan theories seem to be pointing towards McPherson having something to do with this.

We don't know exactly what McPherson knew about the watch, why he left it for Artie. I wonder if McPherson used the astrolabe which caused him to turn evil, both he and Artie's possessor were releasing artifacts into the world...

Yeah, I'm with Zoom on this one. Part of what Mrs. Frederic a great character is how mysterious she is, and IMO a origin would ruin that.

^^ How mysterious is Mrs Frederic, though? really. She's a Human being, she's got kids and grandkids. We know that she's very old and connected to the Warehouse. She's cool because she is who she is. I don't think knowing her biography would lessen that.

That's an interesting theory. Since McPherson was redeemed, it would be cool if he were to somehow come back and save Artie.

Mysterious is as Mysterious does. We do have a fair amount of knowledge about her without it degrading her mysteriousness. I agree that an origin story probably wouldn't diminish that.
