I went for "hate them" (though hate is a very strong word to use in this case).

More from an Uhura standpoint than anything. Though never established in TOS, as Communications Officer it makes sense for her to be a linguist, so that isn't new to the character. All they could think to do to give her more to do was to make her a romance of a main character, which is pretty lame IMO.

^ I don't think that's all that happened. Of course, it's possible that they might fall into that trap, if you will, of her being the girlfriend that just happens to also hail frequencies, but I really hope it doesn't go in that direction. In the last movie, it seemed to me that aside from her relationship with Spock, they demonstrated her skill in linguistics when she was able to understand Romulan dialects when another officer couldn't, and she had the guts to fight for her rightful position on Enterprise. That's not a bad beginning to me.

Sorry to hear that you "hate" them, though. I wonder why it would be okay for her to be a xenoliguist in the new movie, although that wasn't confirmed in the Prime timeline, but it's not okay for her to have love in her life, even though there was some flirting that never was confirmed to have gone beyond that in the Prime timeline. I don't get that.

It was never directly stated that she was a linguist, but being a communications officer would need training and understanding of languages. It's an easy assumption that can be made, you don't get an important post such as Chief Comm Officer on a starship without specialising in the field.

Honestly, love them.
It was such a nice surprise and I like how the writers pulled it off in the movie.
Why not? Everyone I know said "finally!" to Spock getting an actual love interest. It makes sense, he's half human, hell even vulcans can love and can love humans (he's the result of it).
I always liked their chemistry in the show, I thought that he had a soft spot for her and he was the only one from the crew to whom the original Uhura has showed some actual interest in the original series unlike, to say, grandpaScotty/grandmaUhura that were only hinted in star trek V and it came out from nowhere (*and she was under the influence of Syboc anyway. I hate that movie and the treatment of her character.)
That said, the Spock/Uhura relationship is new to this reality and makes more sense here (eg. he was her teacher and she worked with him as his TA before they started to work aboard the enterprise. In the prime universe they had met each other many years later so here they got the chance to actually get close that they didn't get the other time)
I think that they make sense as I can easily see why Uhura would be attracted by him and understand him better than other people and why Spock would fall for a woman like her that is a mix of logic (similar to his "vulcanity") and emotion (that his human side may long for). They have more in common than any other character in the movie and it seemed that they really cared about each other.

Look at this interesting tidbit

Nichelle Nichols: Um. Gene Roddenberry originally did not want to write, was not writing a science fiction film. He wanted to write about the human condition between men and women of all races that reflected American and reflected out to the world. And, uh, thereby have high drama. Um. *sigh*
So when I went on interview for the role before Paramount and NBC knew I was going to be on, the roll had not been written and I read a scene that they asked me to read that was three characters: Somebody named Kirk, somebody named Bones, and somebody named Spock. And they asked me if I would read for this role of the person named Spock. And I said “Fine” because it was a long scene and he had a big part. And I thought this was the role and I said, “Tell me about this character. What is she like?”
And they looked at me like I was crazy and said “It’s not.. He’s not.. Spock is not a she, Spock is a he, we just haven’t written a role yet but this can… we can see from here.”
And I said, “Could she be a woman” And they said
“Leonard Nimoy would not like it”. *laugh*
And so I said tell me something about the character and I’ll read as though I was reading for the character. To make a long story short I got the role. But, I took my reading from what they told me Spock was about. In developing that character, and I told Gene Roddenberry about it when he decided on the book I was reading which was a Treaty from Africa called “Uhuru”. He said he wanted to use that but he said why don’t we do a little alliteration on it it because he said it was too harsh. And, I said “make it Uhura” and he said you’ve named your character it belongs to you. And I set forth then, he said “You come from the United States of Africa. I’ve just decided.” And I decided then from the character that I read [Spock] that I wanted to be very much like that character but in a feminine way. And Gene said, and I was sharing this with George the other day, when I told him that I thought of Spock as my mentor. Because if you remember Uhura was the only one he was able to teach the Vulcan lyre to and he sang and spooffed on Spock. Now, you could have never had a love scene in 63 between Uhura and Spock but there were several hints and Gene was one in the kind of beginning to follow that and he wanted to do episodes if we had gone past the third year, because this is about the 3rd year we were talking, he wanted to do episodes that got into all of the stars life so that you had not one star or two stars and supporting cast, which we really are not. *laugh* But that was the essence of that. And, JJ was a big Star Trek fan and he invited me to lunch and I told him about creating the character. Whether he got and what my relationship with Spock, um, whether he got that idea from there I don’t know. If he took it and ran with it and thought “Wow”.

Why would that be? Could it be because then she might not break up "the big three" or something of that nature, or is there another reason? I don't see what makes Spock a poor choice compared to Scotty or Sulu. And as far as the 2009 movie goes, she (Zoe) didn't and I think wouldn't have had the kind of chemistry with Pegg or Cho that she had with Quinto. Their story together makes the most sense, but I'd still like your feedback. I'm interested to know why you think she'd be better with other people.

Right, and that was my point. You can easily assume that she would have been a linguist based off of what you did see, so why would it be so hard to also easily assume that Spock and Uhura could have been a couple if circumstances were different based off of what you did see?

I am very glad to read this, but since the films are rebooting the entire story, everything had to be "fleshed out," including the characters. That's where their relationship came in, and it made sense to me. The only people that seemed to have real problems with it, that I've come across, were TOS fans that believed the movie needed to be about "the big 3."

Nichelle's words on this are very eloquent, illustrating, and to the point. I think it's interesting to know that some people may have gotten wrong impressions of what the crew was like (and what their roles were) based off of an incomplete series. Unfortunately, it was cancelled before it got the chance to complete storylines that may have better served the rest of the crew by going more in-depth as far as their importance and abilities. Too bad. There were movies that came afterward, but by that time, the formula had been set. I never saw ST:V, and from the sound of it, I'm glad that I didn't.

I think that you hit the nail on the head

Personally, I can't see what the heck TOS Uhura had in common with Scotty or Sulu or when or where she has showed some genuine interest in them romantically. Even less, I can't see why Nu!Uhura should be attracted by either of them (nu!Uhura who, I want to remind for the sake of, intercepted and translated a transmission from a Klingon prison planet in her spare time and that essentially saved everyone's butt)
Talking about the actual television series developed by Gene Roddenberry here, of course, not the movies, specially not the ones like star trek V that Gene Roddenberry himself didn't consider canon for plenty of reasons. The movies are no different than JJ's movie, in that sense neither Spock/Uhura nor Scotty/Uhura were canon in TOSeries, they're canon only in the movies where each director and set of writers proposed their own version.

I think that if people are against Spock/Uhura because it reduces her to a love interest then it doesn't make sense for them to approve any Uhura pair, at all , especially not Uhura/Scotty that not only did came out from nowhere in TFF (and in that you can essentially criticize them using the same reasons that are now used against Spock/Uhura) but it was bad taste, frankly, as they were old people and she was under the influence of Syboc who was using her for his own purposes. Not to mention her nude dance scene from the same movie
It felt forced to me in TFF it figures in the Abrams' verse they didn't even interact in that movie.
On the other hand, nuSpock and Uhura know each other since years.

Spock and Uhura did have some flirting scenes in TOS and GR had wanted to explore that from the get go but he couldn't do that. So, If you can easily buy a random couple like Scotty/Uhura in TFF without having any actual hint of that in the original series, then it shouldn't be so hard to buy the Spock/Uhura thing in the alternative reality.

or the big TWO. To be fair, there wasn't this big 3, at all. It became the Kirk/Spock story and in that JJ isn't the one to blame. I do wonder why people care so much about McCoy now but didn't have any issue with him losing his importance in the prime universe.
I will be very glad if they'll include McCoy in the trio again but I will be even more glad if they will have "the big 4" this time like it seems that they're trying to do with Uhura.
