The Valar's "Wizard Initiative" was almost a complete failure, wasn't it? The blue wizards went native and disappeared completely, Saruman became arrogant, corrupted and ultimately, evil, Radagast spent more time talking to birds than fighting Sauron. And they had to reboot Gandalf before he worked properly.
It's thought that Radagast's mission was actually successful, though that assumes that his mission was to protect the flora and fauna of the world should Sauron succeed. The same holds true for blue wizards. One thought is the reason Sauron was stepping up his plans in the west was because at least one of the blue wizards managed to take control of the dragons to the east, and Sauron needed to find a way to counter that. Hence the heavy influence of dragons in Eastern culture.

Likewise, Gandalf didn't really fail. In fact, he sacrificed himself in order to help the mission at hand. He was "rebooted" partly as a reward for that sacrifice.

Yeah. If you can't tell, the tone of my post was not entirely serious.

Anyway. Other people seem to think that the Blue Wizards were sent East to find the lost Avari elves and bring them back to Valinor.

Yeah, I couldn't tell either. That's the problem with text. You've got to give clues as to tone.

The "Wizard initiative" and "rebooting Gandalf" weren't clues?

Never been a LotR fan but I'll be watching this for McCoy, my favourite Doctor!

Is his part substantial?

Radagast is strictly a supporting character. He appears very little in the book and extra material so it's hard to say how much of a role he will have in the film (or films, we don't even know if he's just in the first one or not).

Given that they're taking a book that could easily fit into one film and have padded it out to THREE films, I suspect every character's part has been beefed up, including the ones who don't actually apppear in The Hobbit...

Especially when they've already said that they suspect that Radaghast will become a fan favorite.

I certainly hope so. It'll be really nice to see McCoy's career get such a huge boost.

This. Along with Tom Baker, I grew up on Sylvester McCoy as The Doctor and for many years remained my second favorite Doctor. Troughton, Smith and McGann (via the audios) have recently surpassed him but his Doctor remains very special to me and I'm absolutely thrilled by this role for him.

I'm torn. I really like the guy who seems to be a nice and clever bloke, but to say the least, I've never warmed to his particular brand of acting and I've yet to find him convincing in any role. Maybe he'll be amazing in this, who knows?
