No, TATV was always meant to be the Season Four finale. If they'd somehow managed a Season Five, TATV still would have happened, they just would have done something to get around Trip's death.

Remember that they never actually showed his body. If they'd gotten the renewal notice in time, they could have rewritten some dialogue to make his status even more ambiguous before revealing he was alive in the Season Five premiere.
^^^^
Given all we actually saw in TATV was a 100% Holodeck recreation; it wouldn't matter what they showed -- as we NEVER 'saw' the actual events during the actual time period they were tp have occured in (2161).

TATV is best explained away as: "It was something referenced by Deanna Troi; and for all we know she FAILED her pre-Federation history courses at the academy.

It's Troi fantasy about getting Riker into the kitchen.

Troi has very dull fantasies.

Not that they ever will outside of novels, but they can still undo TATV. As a little bonus for those who stick around after the credits at the end of the next movie. Fade in on Captain Riker in his ready room on the USS Titan. Door chimes. Troi comes in.

"Remember that holodeck simulation we played years ago, where Trip Tucker died on the first Enteprise?" she asks.

Riker nods.

"Well... I don't think it was entirely accurate."

Troi steps aside, revealing a dishevelled, stubbly, muddy Trip standing in the doorway.

"Huh." Riker replies.

*fadeout*

(very small part of Trek fanbase jumps for joy)

Fade in on Captain Riker
So I'm sitting here wondering if this canon correction would make it worth having to see Riker in my most anticipated movie ever and I honestly don't know.

Maybe she needs to fantasize about Riker in the gym. Seems he's spent too much time in the kitchen.
