Dark Knight (Rises) for the actors and story

what story? What actors? The actors are caught in the blinding lights of the script's needlessly complex and nonsensical narrative.. only the least likely character to work, Catwoman, seems fresh and vibrant (I loathed the scenes with her before the film came out, but everything else was so off-point that, oddly enough, she works better than and in spite of the rest of the movie) and sense of dread and paranoia of post 9/11 that carried the also-overcomplicated Dark Knight past plot holes that were just as large is non-existent here, save for the scene with the bridge being destroyed. The film is a too much of a mess to have a story, and the story that it does have is just an excuse to have way too many characters all speaking the most banal lines of dialogue ever. In Batman Begins, the viewer knows at the end when and where the hero and villain come at odds at each other philosophically when Ra's burns his house down. In the Dark Knight the Joker spells it out when he's upside down at the end. In this film, when Batman meets Bane at the end, Bane asks him if he was going to die with the others, and Batman responds "No, I'm going to stop you!!!" (growl)

Most of them were pretty bad until Blade showed you didn't have to use a literal visual approach when adapting these properties to the screen.

Blade is such an underrated flick. Fantastic atmosphere, great soundtrack, great cast, cool characters, other worldly visuals, simple but solid story..

For some reason it is hardly ever mentioned when "best comic book movie" talk comes up. I think people just kind of forgot about it because the character is not as famous as other comic book characters. It's probably the only comic book movie that is actually better than the source material, too. Blade comics were pretty mediocre from what I've heard (never read them though)

Picked up the new US release of it on blu ray (they finally fixed the aspect ratio problem of the first release) and it's held up very well other than a couple of iffy (but passable) late 90s cgi effects at the end.

Yeah, I think its obscure-to-most origins helped them avoid interference with that flick. I need to queue that up for a rewatch, maybe I'll look into the blu-ray...

All of tjicwould be true if Bane was the actual villain.

I quite like Watchmen (*ducks*). And Sin City. I think some movies are just good loud fun regardless of comic sources - Avengers, Superman, even FF - while others have bigger challenges in adapting source material - like Kick-Ass, which I found meh.

Watchmen was middlin' for me. Not because of any loyalty to the source material. Unlike most younger comics fans I'm not an Alan Moore sycophant. I find most of his work overwrought and pretentious. I found the movie overwrought and pretentious with nice visuals.
