Eddie Murphy, Shawn Ryan pitching ‘Beverly Hills Cop’ TV Series

The next generation Beverly Hills Cop — that is a hot hour long pitch from Beverly Hills Cop star Eddie Murphy and The Shield creator Shawn Ryan, which is making the rounds right now. I’ve learned that the project is envisioned as a sequel to the hit movie franchise which chronicled the exploits of wise-cracking Detroit detective Alex Foley (Murphy) in Los Angeles. The proposed series has a similar fish-out-of-water setup and centers on Foley’s son who moves to Beverly Hills to escape the shadow of his legendary dad. Murphy is set to reprise his role as Axel in occasional recurring guest appearances.

ABC and Fox heard the pitch today, with NBC and CBS slated to take the meeting tomorrow. All four networks will likely make a play for the project, described as a light procedural.

With all the reboots going on these days it's sort of refreshing to see that this will be a "Son of..." series rather than a reboot. I loved the first movie but the second was merely ok. If it ever goes to series I hope it's good.

They should get Jay Pharoah from SNL to play Foley's son. If they want him to adopt some of the mannerisms of Murphy, Pharoah does an amazing impression of him. If the want him to do all the voices and impressions Foley did in the movies, he would be perfect for that as well. Plus, he's got good comedic timing and delivery.

Can't be any worse than the last movie and Ryan's involvement is certainly a good thing. Still, I don't envy whatever actor has to try to fill Eddie's shoes.

Ryan certainly is keeping busy. In addition to this and Last Resort, he's also working on a TNT pilot with Gregg Hurwitz.

Star Wars (Anakin > Luke) and Terminator (Sarah Connor > John Connor) don't count.
