No, the majority of the story is Data and Shan (or Shon, I can't remember for sure and don't want to get up to check) discussing the captaincy of the new Enterprise-F.

I nearly purchased it today but the magazine was £5 (about as much as I pay for paperbacks off Amazon) and it looked like the story was only a couple of pages long once the pictures are allowed for.

I stopped buying the magazine a few years ago as I felt it wasn't value for money.

That's why it's called a short story.

There are lots of other interesting articles in the magazine. Since the demise of "Starlog", it's the one magazine I buy regularly.

Well, that's not really fair, since short stories can be anything up to 7500 words. The articles I've written for Star Trek Magazine have tended to be more around 800-1500 words, so if this story is anything like the same page count as those, then it would be pretty short even for a "short story." (Short stories under 2000 words are sometimes called "short-shorts," while stories with word counts in the hundreds are known as "flash fiction" these days.)

According to 8 of 5's blog there was another original short story by Christine Thompson in the newest issue of the magazine. My subscription ran out, so I won't be reading this one sadly.

I was trying to decide what to read tonight. This thread decided it for me. I'm going to download this issue right now, because I think it's exciting to read the first published fiction of the Enterprise F and its new captain.

Star Wars Insider has fiction in each issue. I wish they will do the same with Star Trek Magazine. They are the same publisher, right? Titan?

I hope not - I don't want to have to keep paying that much for a few dozen words of fiction...

The magazines have plenty of other cool stuff in them.

If you're not prepared to pay that much to read a story ASAP, then wait a while and buy your copy second hand.

You could probably also make your money back (or more!) selling the magazine yourself - after you've read it - on eBay, to a fan who lives in an area where it's hard to buy the issue at retail.

For me, I've not brought copy in years as the cost compared with the quantity of what's inside has been too high for my taste for several years now.

But I guess not every one isn't as picky as me when it comes to Trek branded goods.
