Incidentally, GRRM is writing episode 7 in season 3, and says that in it "it rains a lot."

Which I wonder if that implies that the big event of the season might actually be squeezed into episode 8...

Anyway, they're certainly swapping stuff around from here on in - Theon's hardly in ASOS, but will be in season 3 a fair bit...

Based on the structure of the previous two seasons, I suspect this will be in episode 9, but they may yet surprise us by having the big dramatic climax in the actual finale. Though really I suspect the cliffhanger will be

"Lady Stoneheart" appearing.

I'd say the Purple Wedding is more likely. Viewers need something uplifting after RW. The PW would manage to do that while still being a true cliffhanger due to Tyrion being arrested.

I think the Purple Wedding will be in the fourth season. The uplifting end for the third season will probably be Dany cutting a slave-freeing swathe across Essos.

Apparently Dominic West formerly of the Wire was offered the role of Mance, but turned it down.

Maureen Ryan of the Huffington Post has discovered, in the course of an interview, that English actor Dominic West—perhaps best known for his role as McNulty in the critically acclaimed The Wire, and currently heading up the BBC’s The Hour—was offered a part on HBO’s Game of Thrones... a part which he passed up because, apparently, it involved being in Iceland for several months (or so he recalls) and that it was a prominent role.

Ryan speculates a number of possibilities, but we think her first guess—that he was offered the part of Mance Rayder, the former ranger of the Night’s Watch who has proclaimed himself King beyond the Wall—is pretty much spot on. West would have been fairly perfect for the part, it must be said, but it seems that’s not meant to be. As we know from recent remarks, the role of Mance Rayder was still in casting just two weeks ago.

The one positive is that HBO wants a 'name' actor for Mance.

If they do Astapor in episode 10, then there's almost nothing to tell about her in the 9 episodes before. It would be worse than her arc in season two.

That's an inevitable issue with splitting A Storm of Swords over two years: it's all one book, with one story for each character. Arya, for example, has all of two chapters after the Red Wedding, which will have to expand to cover a large chunk of season four. Bran has a grand total of seven chapters across all of Storm and Dance, which will somehow be stretched over at least three seasons. I live in fear that Benioff and Weiss will address this by contriving more original material, at which I don't think they're particularly good.

I really don't seem them putting the Purple Wedding in season three. Once that happens, you've got at most four episodes' worth of King's Landing plot before "Lord Tywin Lannister did not, in the end, shit gold," and that's a bit early to be reaching the end of A Storm of Swords. I tend to think a lot more time will pass between the Red and Purple Weddings in the TV show than did in the books, so that we don't get the latter until around the middle of season four.

They're going to have expand Dany's arcs in general. They did that to an extent in season two, but they're going to have to go further in future seasons to keep the audience interested. Dany has seven chapters in Storm. Astapor is in the third one and Yunkai in the fourth. Dany's third season arc should culminate in one of them.

Funny enough, another website suggested West for this role around the time I was reading the books. And so I 'cast' him as Mance in my head when I was reading them. Shame he turned them down.
