So, I don't know much about this series, but is this the kind of thing that have mass-market appeal as a film series? It seems geared heavily toward adult women; just how graphic is the story, and can it be given a PG-13 rating without being ruined?
The books have graphic NC-17 rated sex scenes. The movies need to be at least rated R to work.

Remember that these books are aimed at older female readers.

Even though some teens or kids read it, it doesn't mean it is aimed at them.

That's what I'm wondering. Would studios even bother with a movie trilogy that would have such a narrow fanbase, or would they re-work the stories to make them more accessible to teens?

Didn't Twilight have a huge fanbase too of a niche group? Seems like those movies are working.

Not my point. It's a lot easier to take a children's or teen's series and make it accessible to adults (which is why things like Twilight and Harry Potter have become successful) than it is to go the other way around.

The studio that bought the movie rights are definitely interested. This series has become huge recently and they need to strike while the craze is still going strong by making the movies.

Taking the graphic sex scenes away from Fifty Shades is like taking the magic away from Potter or taking the Vampires away from Twilight. It can't be done without losing much of the audience.

They can't go with a NC-17 rating since that is something that kills movies, theaters won't even bother to show it.

But they can't wimp out on the sex scenes. PG-13 sex scenes are always so lame.

The R rated is the best middle ground. This movie was never going to make a billion dollars, but with that rating it can still be a hit if the keep the budget low like around 40 million. There have been plenty of R rated moviess that have become hits. The sex scenes won't cost very much to film. This will be difficult to do, but not impossible.

There's a ton of soccer moms, housewifes and others out there who just aren't interested in the latest Michael Bay/Superhero/CGI fest and they rarely go to the movies because they are uninterested in today's blockbusters.

This however strikes their mood and themes so i expect it to become a big success, in the same vein that Twillight touches the romantic moods of pre-teenage and teenage girls and give them something to long for (if i only had "men" like them to be interested in me!).. 50 Shades is just the more mature version of it (If i only had someone to fuck me like that!).

This book is on my to read list - in 50,000th place. As I only read about 100 books a year I think I will have to be reincarnated a few times before I get around to it.

My wife says it's a fairly easy read and everything's quite predictable. Despite that, she's really enjoying the series and when I told her it's going to be on the silver screen eventually, she was stoked.

I think the fact this is such a phenomenon will translate into a robust box office, even with an R rating.

I only read about 2 or 3 books a year. I'll get around to this somewhere in the 30th Century.

I've heard from all the ladies that I work with who have read it that it's good. I haven't read it yet, because I can't see spending that much money on something that could quite possibly suck. So, what I'm hearing from you guys is that it's "used price" read. Thanks for helping me make up my mind. Cheers.

I read the first few pages using the Amazon "Look Inside" feature. I found reading just the first 10 pages to be painful. I didn't get to any of the sex scenes.

Since I seem to be the target demographic, maybe I ought to read this. Though it sounds as if it may actually be even worse than my own fanfic, which would be a real stretch.

Small thought: why is it 'manly' when males (of any age) look at images of sex, but somehow 'sad' when women (especially older ones) read about it? Porn mags have known for years that while men respond to images, women are more likely to respond to words - which is why they have text sections. The books may well be crap (TLR!) but women reading about sex is surely ok? no?
