People don't care how obscure the comic is. They just care if it looks like a fun movie.

Of those four, Blade is unwatchable; Hellboy really only works if I pretend that the new guy actually was recruited because he has some sort of healing powers so what's-her-name goes sane and John Hurt is cured, so that it genuinely matters when his character is killed; The Mask is nothing but Jim Carrey; Men in Black did work, but then, I said, very few, not none. The Rocketeer works well too but its premise has the nostalgia factor built in.

Obviously, the subtext is "very few work for me..."

Comparing the first and last sentences, "to each his own" obviously should have read "to each his own, so long as it doesn't contradict my taste, in which case, his own should be kept secret, like the noisome vice it is."

No offense to any of you. I picked it up because I'd read about them in OHOTMU and was a great concept. It certainly had some great moments, and I stuck with it for twenty issues or so, but... no. Too many things that were overly-contrived or nonsensical. It diluted the parts of it that I enjoyed. And it got worse as it went.

Not that I'd object to a movie. A ragtag team of futuristic superpowered freedom fighters is still a great concept.

No offense taken. Everybody's entitled to their own taste and opinion. I thought Valentino did a great job and I also liked the team that followed him, though I can't remember their names at the moment.

In fact, I like most of the characters in the nuGuardians, too, so they may very well make for a good movie-- I'm just a little prejudiced because the book looked so awful.

Bah. I don't want Guardians-lite; I want the *real* Guardians from the 31st century! It had a real Farscape flavor to it.

The original Guardians reminded me more of Star Trek, their original ship the Captain America even looked alittle like the original Enterpise.

Translation: The esthetic quality of comic book movies is such a loser I'd better go off on an irrelevant but gallery pandering aside.

History of Violence and Road to Perdition weren't trash but the critical approval for them was mystifying. It wasn't til afterwards, trying to figure out what was wrong with them, that I even knew they were based on "graphic novels." As far as popularity goes, the biggest hits are generally those that have long established fan bases, i.e., nostalgia. Iron Man is like The Mask, strictly a star vehicle. The Avengers of course had massive buildup with Iron Man, Captain America, Thor and Iron Man II. There are many who find nostalgia a major factor in the success of a comic book movie.

Were the comics part of the DnA Marvel Cosmic stuff? A lot of people do seem to like those books.

You're right, they shouldn't bother. They should just bring out an Adam Sandler comedy or Jennifer Anniston rom-com instead. Sod taking a chance every now and then.
