Re: Movies Seen in 2012

I'm going to see The Avengers tonight, so I looked at my Fandango account to see what movies I have actually seen in the movie theater.

I saw 3 movies so far this year,

Jan 1st: Tron Legacy in IMAX 3D
Feb 29th: Black Swan
Jun 26th: Cars 2

71. City Streets (D)
72. Hard Boiled (A)

City Streets: This early Gary Cooper vehicle (released in 1931) has a lot of technical ambition, especially in terms of sound, but that doesn't prevent it from being a rather unremarkable B-picture in the final analysis. The film is so short (83 minutes) that characters don't grow or change; they go from acting one way in one scene to acting another way in another scene, always at the service of the plot. Worse, even at that short length, the whole affair is endlessly padded. Paramount was never as good as Warner Bros. at gangster pictures in the '30s, and City Streets is no exception. An early use of the audio-flashback is so silly it must be witnessed, though. A shame the movie isn't out on video for that purpose, at least.

Hard Boiled: John Woo's follow-up to Bullet in the Head is (purposefully) much more commercial, but, honestly, it's all the better for it. The tone (despite the body count, which must surpass the worst of the Rambo series) is consistently jocular, and the action has rarely been surpassed. The score sometimes betrays itself with early '90s synthesizer cheesiness, but it's not a deal breaker. Definitely worth seeing on the big screen.

The Monk
Vincent Cassel is many things, but he's not young or exceptionally handsome, so he's a bit of a stone's throw from the Monk's Ambrosio. A rather dour if largely faithful adaption of the Matthew Lewis novel, it lacks the vicious schadenfraude that the novel so gleefully indulges in with its title character. Passable, anyway.
That's one of my favourite novels, so it's disappointing to here that it didn't work. Always seemed like it would make a great movie to me.

So, yeah...I got a pass good for two to see CD last night. My friend Donna is in to all things Russian, so she came out to be my plus one. If she hadn't agreed to see it, I wouldn't have bothered 'til it opened...

...and she bailed on me thirty minutes into the movie!!!

Wild dogs were used for one of the early scares in the film, and she decided to leave, because she's a dog lover.

I stuck it out, though...not a great movie, but worth seein' for free, if ya can swing it.

I was also able to get Donna a full sheet, double sided movie poster for the movie, thanks to the Warner Bros promo guy, which she took with her when she bailed on me.

Moonrise Kingdom
A very Wes Anderson movie; and also a giddily hilarious one. Colorful, weird, dry, excellent performances elicited from the child actors, etc. I'm going to go ahead and call this the best film I've seen so far this year.

Having a three and two year olds is not conclusive with going to the movies. However, gonna make a real effort to go more often.

On a side note, The Avengers was good. Not as good as I thought it was going to be, but what ever I got to the movies to see it.

21. Sucker Punch: B-
22. Knight & Day: C+
23. Mechanic: B
24. Devil: A
25. Dark Shadows: C+

This movie was about one rewrite away from being something really good. The only version I saw fully was the 13 episode 1992(?) relaunch attempt. That was a very well done show with great production values that did not play as campy as some of the reruns I'd seen on the emerging Sci-Fi channel.

The first act of the movie plays things as straight and serious as one might expect for a Burton film. The origin, unrequited love, revenge, and introduction of Victoria Winters were all good elements of the fist act. The state of affairs for the Collins and Collinwood were all well portrayed.
It's when act II starts is when the film begins getting into the more silly, although at first it's not bad. But by the time you snowball down to the films conclusion just enough little silly things, that didn't have to be, build.
The final fight scene between Barnabas and Angelique just didn't feel like much. My lack of familiarity with the show aside the revelation about Carolyn and her, ahem, condition is just a left field moment.

Overall it was better than I'd heard. The soundtrack was good, the cinematography was nice and if the film had stayed with the tonal elements of the first act throughout the film I think it would've been better.

Oh, and modern Alice Cooper making a cameo in '72 was just another WTF in the film imo.

152. Chernobyl Diaries: (✩✩✩½) - Theatre - I wasn't planning on seeing this, but a friend from out of town came by and we went to see it. I found it to be a decent and gripping horror/suspence piece eventhough it didn't break any new ground. It also introduced me to a new hottie... Devin Kelley.

And for those who've seen it...

54. Mystic River (A)

The film that really kicked off the best period in Eastwood's time as a director, and cemented his legacy in the same field. It's taken me a while to get to watching it; once I bought a $5 DVD copy, only to realize it was fullscreen when I got home, so I piously avoided watching in that format.

Anyway, it's a strong movie. It think Penn overplays it in a few places, but Tim Robbins does some of his best work, and Marcia Gay Harden is even better as his conflicted wife. Kevin Bacon is reliable as ever, and he and Laurence Fishburne make a good team. There are a couple of weird notes to the ending that make me hold off on giving it the highest grade, but it's a great film.

Watched B:YO last night, which was a pretty good adaption of the comic. Read the trade last year when I was in Louisiana. I also watched the animated short Catwoman, which was in the same continuity as B:YO, since it had Eliza Dushku as the voice of Selina Kyle, and had the same character look (without the mask) and another character from B:YO.

Watchin' BvsD on DVD now....

153. Harry and the Hendersons: (✩✩½) - Live TV - Finally saw this one. The Hendersons inadvertently bring home a sasquatch, then try to get rid of him. When the news starts reporting on a dangerous creature running around the city, the Hendersons try to get him back and keep him away from a guy obsessed with tracking down bigfoot. Lots of hilarity, hijinx and heartwarming family fun. Stars John Lithgow. Not my cup of tea, but at least I saw it. The makeup for Harry was quite good and stood out though. I don't know how they create life-like expressive faces for these creatures.

154. The Last Song: (✩✩✩) - Live TV - The entertainment world is abuzz with the news that Miley Cyrus has had sex and thinks it's magical. Within minutes of finding this out, I found myself watching The Last Song, which stars her and her devirginizer Liam Hemsworth. The movie is about a troubled girl who's sent off to spend the summer with her father (Greg Kinnear) in a southern coastal town. There, she meets a boy who's rich parents don't like her. The title of the movie will make sense as the story progresses. It's also pretty obviously a Miley Cyrus vehicle, and as I was reading up on it, I was surprised to see that it was designed around her. She wanted to do a movie like A Walk to Remember and got it. The screenplay was even cranked out before the novel to accomodate her schedule.

Solid enough entry that deserves credit for not being a rehash of the first film AND exploring Agent J&K's relationship with each other. Worth seeing.

155. Women in Trouble: (✩✩✩½) - DVD - A pulp fiction-style independent film about various women and their problems. As with Pulp Fiction, we get a few independent stories, but they're loosly connected. We've got Elektra Luxx (Carla Gugino), a porn actress who gets some bad news, a shrink (Sarah Clarke) who finds out what her husband has been up to, a call girl (Adrianne Palicki) who's a little scattered, and a stewardess (Marley Shelton) who decides to join the mile-high club only to have the rock star she's getting it on with (Josh Brolin) run into some trouble as turbulence hits. And to round out the all-star cast, we've also got Simon Baker, Emmanuelle Chriqui, Elizabeth Berkley and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It's not as hip or as edgy as Pulp Fiction, but it's not bad.

156. Elektra Luxx: (✩✩✩) - DVD - This is the sequel to Women in Trouble and continues the lives of our various characters. I'm guessing that the reason this one is titled "Elektra Luxx" is because the various stories link to her in some way. Gone are Simon Baker, Elizabeth Berkley and Josh Brolin, and joining the cast are Timothy Olyphant, Malin Akerman, Julianne Moore and Kathleen Quinlan. This one is pretty good too, but I found it to be a little more talky.

A third installment is planned, called Women in Ecstacy. I can't wait to see it if it gets off the ground.
