55. The Woman in Black (2012)

The film is ok. There is a very good sequence in the middle where Radcliff (whose good here) is alone on the screen for a long time and there's pretty much no dialogue, but unfortunately the film continues for quite some time after that.
It has a few scares (accompanied by loud music and sound effects), but in the end it didn't amount to much, I thought.

Finally watched the Underworld prequel on DVD! It was actually pretty good, maybe even my favorite of the four movies, just 'cause I find vampires & werewolves easier to tolerate in a medievil settin' than in a modern one.

Got into the almost sold out second show of the day for The Raven this afternoon.

It started out well enough, but the endin' was just a mess.

Guess there's a reason the studio released it the week before Avengers kicks box office ass.

60. Everything Must Go (B+)

Everything Must Go: This isn't the first time that Will Ferrell has delivered an impressive, dramatic performance, but it's always refreshing to see him play a figure other than the buffoon. Here he plays an alcoholic whose wife kicks him out of the house on the same day that he's fired from his job. There are laughs, surely, but the character's drinking problem isn't something to be laughed at as it might be in one of Ferrell's broad comedies. You can see where this is going at the outset, but it's not the large gestures that are important; it's the small details. And the film gets those just right.

18. The Eagle: C+

The Channing Tatum film about the lost 9th Legion of the Roman Army that spurred the building of Hadrian's Wall. The film has a few upticks throughout it but it never fully keeps your attention. Blame the lead, the script or direction but it just gets a bit bland for the second act especially. The ending is a bit anti-climatic. If they did one good thing right it's that the action sequences were put together well at least. Overall I modestly entertaining film but it rides the line of mediocrity imo.

48. In Darkness (B+)

You see a lot of cynical comments about "Holocaust movies" as being awards bait, and while that's true, it's still a very significant artistic topic, and you can see why it attracts people looking to make serious drama. In this case, this is a Polish movie, and given how enormous an event that was to modern Polish history, in a way it's surprising that Polish cinema deals with anything else. This is a good movie, with some notably successful characteristics (it manages to evoke the world of the sewers where its characters hid very authentically), though I don't think it quite crosses the threshold from good to great.

56. Resident Evil: Afterlife

I have to admit that I have a morbid curiosity for this film franchise (never played the games). No, the films are not good by any definition, but they are exactly the right amount of stupid that they are fun to watch once. And I actually regret it a bit that I've not watched this in the cinema, because some scenes would've probably been more fun in 3D.

Picked up the Zoe Saldana revenge movie for cheap the other day, watched it last night. It was alright, not great...but not entirely predictable, either. And she looks good all the way through it.

I'll be goin' to see Studio Ghibli's Princess Mononoke this evenin', and maybe even The Five-Year Engagement, though I think the plot is givin' away in the title...

- edit, to add -

Got together with my friend Barbara to see this week's Studio Ghibli film, the last in the current series the Alamo Drafthouse is showin'. Pretty heavy-handed message about the environment, but nicely animated.

Afterwards, I went on to see the last showin' of the day for The Five-Year Engagement. Most of the best stuff is givin' away in the trailer, and one my favorite punchlines ("This is why we do not delay weddings.") isn't even in the movie. Also, could have really gone without seein' Jason Segel's bare ass in two different scenes. Bare man ass and no bare boobs to compensate.

Thinkin' I may wind up at The Three Stooges some time this week...its the one movie the Drafthouse is showin' that I haven't seen.

This was actually the first one I saw in the theater. I made a DVD marathon of the first three then went to view the film. I will confirm the 3D worked for the film.

I also have never played the games but find the films enjoyable.
The fifth one come out later this year so maybe you can make that one your first cinema viewing of the franchise.

Re: Movies Seen in 2012

125. Never Cry Werewolf: (✩✩½) - Live TV - A girl (Nina Dobrev) suspects that her neighbor is a werewolf and when things go bad, she enlists the help of a washed up celebrity hunter (Kevin Sorbo) to help her stop him. Towards the end of the movie, she sort of becomes a werewolf slayer herself with crossbows, a tight black outfit and whatnot. Funny story... I watched this movie in two installments. Saw the first hour one day and decided to change the channel at the 1 hour mark. Then two days later, I caught it again starting at the one hour mark. Then I thought, why not, I'll just finish the damn thing. It's not a good movie, but Dobrev is good eye candy and Kevin Sorbo is actually funny in his role as the washed up ego-driven celebrity.

126. The Astronaut Farmer: (✩✩✩✩) - DVD - A poor farmer who washed out of the astronaut program decides to build his own rocket and go into space. People think he's nuts, but he perseveres. Billy Bob Thornton stars and he doesn't play his usual asshole character. One can quibble about the logistics of actually building a working rocket and launching it, but I like the message about forging ahead even when others try to discourage you, and the idea of a hobbyist actually building a rocket to go into space is a fun one. The movie wasn't well received, but I loved it.

Last Days Here - free admission

Did a rewatch of Thor & Captain America: The First Avenger last night, to get ready for The Avengers, which I will hopefully be able to see this weekend, since I gave my passes for the advance screenin' to a buddy of mine. Stupid work schedule...

So, the first new movie of May will be Last Days Here, which I'm in line for now...

57. Paths of Glory

Not much to say about it really, it's pretty much a perfect film. Kubrick may have been hell to work with, but his perfectionism really paid off.
