Re: The Legend of Korra - Book One: Air

Amon's whole story about the Firebenders taking away his face doesn't pass the smell test. It really kinda reminded me of the multiples stories of his origin that the Joker told in TDK that were likely all lies.

Perhaps he has reincarnated himself into the world like the Avatar. In a ways I always thought he is kind of the Avatar's opposite number as a spirit.

Some interesting ideas there, Christopher. What you said seems to fit.

A counterbalance.

Interesting, I never thought of the face comment as literal, I just figured he'd been badly burned.

There is no inconsistency in his story. Taken at face value, his face was scarred hideously by a fire bender. What doesn't "pass the smell test" in that?

(I'm not saying that is what is going on or happened, but that was the story Amon was telling)

When they do a close up of his masked face, you don't see any kind of discoloring or scarring around his eyes, his flesh looks unmarked. That could be a clue, or just the simplicity of the character's model design.

Normally when they show Doctor Doom, you see some kind of scarring around his eyes.

Bumi is a ridiculous name for a villain.

He probably thought the same thing, hence his decision to call himself Amon.

Amon is also the name of a pressure point at the base of the neck.

A precise and hard strike on that pressure point is also lethal.

Maybe Amon is actually a reincarnated Lion Turtle.

Re: The Legend of Korra - Book One: Air

This episode certainly intended to establish Amon as a morally ambiguous character.
Contrast this with the fire nation and its atavistic 'we'll conquer all' mentality.

If the next episodes don't transform him into yet another moustache twisting villain, this series might actually try something rarely encountered in cartoons - moral ambiguity as opposed to black vs white confrontations.

Well, aside from Ozai, the main villains from the original show were pretty well rounded; Zuko, Azula, Ty Lee, Mai...
