Your favorite "All in the Family" moments

I'm starting to really enjoy this classic 1970s sitcom. I manage to catch a few episodes when I get home and it's a rock from start to finish. Some of the material goes over my head since it's so topical, though. I was getting such a gigantic laugh from an episode I recently saw where Mike inherits $275. Archie thinks he should be given it because of the free room and board he is giving Mike. After a huge blowout, Gloria says she is now going to pay for Mike and cook his dinner.

There's an exchange in the kitchen between Edith and Gloria. Gloria comes home with a few hamburger patties, but begins to interfere with Edith preparing Archie's dinner. This scene gave me so many laughs.

Gloria: Ma, I bought two tomatoes and I was saving one for tonight.
Edith: Oh, I'm sorry, Gloria, I must have put it in Archie's stew.
Gloria: Maaaaa, how could you do that? I was saving that tomato special for Michael.
Edith: I said I was sorry, Gloria, it looked like a regular tomato. Didn't have no NAME on it or nothing!

Gloria then accidentally burns Edith's rolls in the oven after turning it up to 500 degrees to prepare her burger patties.

Edith: With Archie, the rolls are the best part of the stew!
Gloria: What?
Edith: Well, how do you expect him to sop up the gravy?
Gloria: Well, what do you want me to do?!
Edith: I don't know.
Gloria: Here, Ma, use one of our buns.
Edith: Well, that won't do no good that's a hamburger bun!
Gloria: Well, what do you want me to do?!
Edith: I DON'T KNOW, ALL I KNOW IS YOU RUINED YOUR FATHER'S DINNER!

I love how it escalated so quickly and hearing Edith yell at the top of her lungs is always hysterical.

Post your favorites!

Archie (on visiting Edith's relations during her change):
"He's a bum and he always was and she's a shrew and she always was, and I hate their four rotten kids! And the only way you're gonna get me to Scranton is if some screwball hijacks the aeroplane!"

Gloria: "62 people a year are killed with guns!"
Archie: "Would it make you feel better, little girl, if they was pushed outta windows?"

Edith (referring to Michael): "Archie, you're gonna have a son! The Good Lord has answered your prayers!"
Archie: "In forty-nine years he answers one prayer and this is it?"

Archie: "Suppose there's a fire. Your way, with only a sock and a shoe on one foot, you're only half-dressed. My way, with a sock on each foot, you're up and out the door."
Michael: "Suppose it's raining outside. Your way, with a sock on each foot, my feet would get wet. My way with a sock and a shoe on one foot I could hop around and stay dry."

One of the funniest sitcoms ever.

Some of the All In The Family episodes couldn't possibly be aired today the way they were written. It's hard to imagine any network accepting the script for "The Jeffersons Move Into The Neighborhood". And in "Oh My Aching Back" Archie seeks out a law firm specifically because the partners have Jewish surnames. A Family Guy episode with the exact same premise ("When You Wish Upon a Weinstein") was pulled by Fox in 2001.

Archie's mangling of the English language was always funny.

"wild hornets couldn't drag me down there"

"I've got better fish to fly"

I love when he refers to his lawyer's firm as "the seven savage Jews".

The 70's were the peak of the sitcom.

One of my favorites is when Edith is going through the change and she's having major mood swings.

Edith: You listen to me!
Gloria: Maaa!
Edith: All of you! LISTEN TO ME!

Archie, Mike, and Gloria are all staring straight at her.

Edith: ....well stop looking at me!

When Sammy Davis Jr. kisses Archie at the door for the photograph. God, the look on Archie's face is PRICELESS.

You couldn't get this show on the air today with political correctness.

People keep saying that, but you gotta remember it almost didn't get on the air back then, either, and it was always a worry getting some of the material past network censors, which were actually more strict then than they are today. The purpose of All in the Family was to ruffle feathers. that would be true in any time period.

The episode where Edith was nearly raped. Even though the subject matter was very serious, they successfully managed to sprinkle in some hysterical lines into some of the scenes.

Mike: He tried rape her?!
Archie: Don't say bad things in woids (words)!

When he's trapped in the basement, with no hope of rescue, Archie starts muttering, ''Archibald Bunker......last will and tentacle.''

Better yet, when Archie and Mike are going at it again, Mike blurts, ''But, Arch, why does the news program follow reports of murder and tragedy with commercials for alcohol and hemorrhoids?''
Archie's reply: ''Listen, buddy! There ain't no GREATER TRAGEDY than HEMORRHOIDS!!!!''

Archie and Edith were discussing someone with stuffed and mounted deer head. Edith said she didn't like it because the sad eyes on the deer followed her. Archie said not to worry because they were glass eyes. Edith got even more upset and asked "how could someone be proud of shooting a blind deer?"

Edith's change of life when Archie got fed up with the mood swings and told her she had sixty seconds to change already.

Archie explaining how hell was real and beneath the earth and it was just where mortals couldn't find it, prompting Meathead to reply "I dunno, Arch, Exxon's drilling all over the place."
