I suppose it's to do with climate: In colder climates we tend to just drink beer whereas in warmer climates gulping it down better describes the procedure

Yeah, I kinda figured, but without seeing any behind the scenes footage, I can't claim to know. And I'd also figure that drawing a gun with a string (or actually, one or more strings) attached to it might create various problems as well.
There's footage of how they did the scene somewhere fairly accessible because I remember watching it and thinking how silly it looked on set, and then they showed the final edited scene and I'm like "damn that's cool!".

Might be on that long documentary that's in the original DVD box set.

I think you may be right -it must've been some DVD-Xtra... I'm pretty sure I've seen how they made this exact scene.
