Because Victoria's Secret models are never topless?

Maybe it's because Upton isn't showing enough ribcage.

An impressive story: she's--19, I think?--and she managed to capture the eye of the modeling industry, and become a STAR!

Talk about embodying the American Dream!
I'm sure her career was helped by the fact that her uncle is a U.S. Congressman.
So...you're saying she lobbied? Or he did?

Thanks to the unveiling of her Sports Illustrated cover, Kate Upton is maybe the most famous model in the world today, but she’s still not good enough to walk the runway for Victorias Secret, whose casting director told the New York Times that Upton is basically on par with topless models.

“‘We would never use Ms. Upton for a Victoria’s Secret show … She’s like a Page 3 girl. She’s like a footballer’s wife, with the too-blond hair and that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy.”

You left out the best part of the quote.

we would never use” Kate for a Victoria’s Secret runway show because she’s “too obvious.
Yeah there's no kind of beauty worse than the really obvious kind.

I actually want to vote thumbs down for her because I think models are genuinelly overrated, but ...well it is just kind of obvious she's hot.

Re: Kate Upton: Babe of the week #8 (Feb. 2012)

That's a bizarre quote from the VS casting director. Marisa Miller is one of the VS Angels and she actually started her career doing topless modelling for Perfect 10 and has exactly the kind of blonde bombshell looks that this casting director is denigrating. In fact most of the VS Angels have gone topless for shoots, albeit usually for more high-end publications than Perfect 10, while Kate Upton has yet to pose fully topless.

Saying that Kate Upton has "that kind of face that anyone with enough money can go out and buy" is incredibly rude and insulting. Given how Upton's career is taking off, I wonder if she won't end up working at VS eventually, while this Sophia Neophitou finds herself unemployed.

If you look at the VS models they generally do have a more "unique" look than most models do in the facial features. Upton is insanely beautiful and most assuredly deserving of an up but what the VS CD did, in a rather rude and condescending n\manner, was to say she doesn't have the more unique look they look for. Models, especially high fashion and VS type models, usually have more unique bone structure and other thigns that set them apart and some have a unique look that not everyone will find stunningly pretty but have that unique look that can be worked with in ads and runways.

Kate Upton will ALWAYS be stunningly beautiful but she's more commercial than high fashion and/or VS though the way the fashion world sees things. That said, personally I think she'd be a GREAT VS model myself with her personality and stunning beauty. I'll take authenticity and beauty together every time and she'd be quite relatable to women given her easy going and outgoing personality.

Oh and Page 3 has had some stunningly beautiful women and smack more of elitism and snobbery than real criticism.

No direct lobbying would be needed. Magazine editors know the value of having a close relative of a high-level politician strip down to a bikini. We're not exactly talking about a president's daughter, but I'm sure it got her foot in the door.

I'm sure that being stunningly beautiful as Othello described her is what got her "foot in the door".

I doubt being Fred Upton's niece would make any difference one way or the other in a modelling career. While he's a congressman of some seniority, he has, like most members of the House, almost no national name recognition.

She does have that generic model look that most Sports Illustrated or Playboy models have, and I don't like that sporting event clip. But the eye contact video is amusing and shows that she has a sense of humor about sexuality. I'm sort of vacillating between Sideways and Up, but I'll go with up.

I assume she's the nun in the bikini from Three Stooges?

Eh, I doubt it's anything so direct. The more likely scenario is that, coming from a wealthy family -- the Uptons are the heirs to the Whirlpool Corporation fortune -- Kate would have been able to get a lot of introductions and make connections early on in life. Rich families tend to be well-connected, after all. Having been born rich, she would also naturally have been in a better position to gain good nutrition and health care early on in life, and to expend resources to keep herself in good physical condition.

Fred Upton's the chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee. He ain't lowly.
